Dark Age of Camelot (MMORPG, Daoc)

So many people say "What's that?" when I mention that my first MMO was DAoC!

So you started playing Aion then? How are you liking it? I find it quite challenging ie I die a LOT more than I ever did in WOW. It is beautiful to look at though and is extremely polished gameplay-wise.
Server, race?
Yes, we started with hubby in beta, which he enjoyed enough to pre-order (and got the ability to do "head start" stuff)... I tried a character on his account and liked it enough to get an account of my own.

The play I like, the flying takes some getting used to. One of the things I disliked about WoW was that you'd build a pattern of pressing the same three (or maybe four) buttons over and over - and that's without using any add-ons. The same is not so true with Aion as (like in DAoC) there are more reactionary strikes, whether it chains off something your opponent does or chains off something you do yourself (parry, block).

My (main) character is an Asmodian Gladiator on Perento. She's a lot of fun but I've hit a wall as a lot of the quests I have take me to PvP areas and there are enough "power gamers" that were already quite high within the first week or two that questing in enemy zones or shared PvP zones is a frustrating exercise in futility.

After having characters that pick flowers and mine nodes in WoW, I find it quite natural to do some gathering in Aion... which ultimately yields up a bit of "grind" in order to clear the node. This is a key piece of info as my hubby, contrary to my own habits, hardly gathers at all and winds up clearing entire zones of quests and finds himself having to grind in order to complete a level so new quests open up. He's not terribly fond of grinding so also has hit a bit of a wall himself.

I think we'll both be more alright once we get up nearer to 40 (and higher) but I'll offer that between 25'ish and 40, it is a bit of a struggle just because of the PvP factor. (There are a lot of bored - or blood thirsty - lvl 40+ players coming to sack zones where level 25-30'ish players are questing... and they can see you on the map. )

The lore aspect is something different for me... with DAoC there were familiar names to mobs and the lore in general was familiar as it was largely based on Celtic, Norse and Arthurian legend / mythology. WoW again was at least a bit familiar as hubby was a fiend for all things Warcraft so would often go into detail about the lore there as well. Aion though is something new, a game that neither of us has pre-existing knowledge regarding lore, so it is nice that we can both "learn" it as we go.

Finally, one thing came as a shock to me as I have always played on US servers for DAoC, and WoW and didn't get into LOTRO, AoC or Pirates of the Burning Sea enough to notice...
I find it very frustrating and odd how much people argue about what language others use to communicate. Perento is listed as an English server but there are a lot of folks who play there and are from different countries... general chat and trade chat often "explode" into arguments about Swedes, Russians, Italians and Spanish folk posting LFG and recruitment messages in their own languages.

For me, this is a bit of a peeve as there are NO servers designated to handle those languages, I happen to think folks should simply let others do as they will. I think if you don't understand them and they can't understand you that well, you don't necessarily want to group with them or join their legion (guild) anyhow.

Ah well, people can be idiots no matter where they are I suppose.

Re: Any Computer gamers here?

I'm actually quite happy I'm not playing Daoc or any other Mmorpg anymore, what a fantastic waste of time. (in a good way sometimes, but still... you spend hundreds of hours doing something you actually don't really enjoy that much... just to get further)
Took me fairly long to realize though, I was a real Daoc Junkie, one of the better PvP and RvR players.

Re: Any Computer gamers here?

I used to play WOW.... afew lvl 80's - currently playing Aion on the weekends..... tough- but I like it tough - WOW became way too easy.

My first MMORPG was Ultima Online - before they nerfed it and there was TRUE PVP - including looting corpses of players.....

During the week - I am addicted to Facebook/Bejeweled...... Zuma Revenge Big Kahuna Reef and Evony (free online strat thing sort of).

And related to another post - but perfect to here.......

Id like to introduce all old school gamers to a crazy "musical" instrument the "Theremin" (thanks Verb)

lost many years to Ever-Crack err I mean Everquest. Then Switched to DAoC, then WOW.
Kinda of hard to stay away from the games when you own a web hosting company that deals with the clan and guilds. Mainly focus on the FPS gamers right now, the ones that play AAO and Modern Warfare.

Still don't understand why my wife calls me a 49 year old kid.
Hey, but at least I can switch back to everquest now, seeing how there is nothing to do around here -- My EverQuest accounts are like 10 years old, don't play them much but keep on paying for them

I actually had started gaming because I was too into partying when I lived in Daytona - driving to Orlando, Miami or Tampa about every weekend. :O
(Speaking of which, you may want to update your profile with your new location )

Meanwhile, I do not know what the population is like in EQ these days, I know the servers for DAoC have been merged and maybe merged again (and again) with maybe a couple hundred players on each server... groups are a bit sparse.

Aion is pretty good, going from DAoC (or any more PvP "focused" game) is probably a smoother transition than playing WoW for years (I started the spring after launch) and then trying to get back into a PvP groove.

It is an interesting enough game that I actually stayed up til 5am playing recently... something that hasn't happened in WoW probably ever and in DAoC it was a long time ago.

What sort of games and other things do you enjoy already?

WoW (high fantasy) is a fantastic "starter" game as the controls are fairly simple and the storyline is engaging but not something you must know in order to enjoy the game. There are something around 12 million people playing - a game doesn't get to be THAT popular without catering to a very wide range of gaming styles.

Aion I've stopped playing as I have grown just too independent and making it past the mid-20s with higher level players "ganking" you while questing in contested zones is not my thing... in order to survive that you have to play a lot and group a lot, two things I'm wanting to avoid.

Meanwhile, there IS a new Star Wars MMO coming out "soon"... beta for that begins in February I believe.

Most MMOs have free trials offered someplace, WoW does for sure, I do not know if Aion is out long enough to have started that yet.

If you are interested in trying WoW, perhaps someone who plays on EU servers could / would shoot you a "recruitment" invitation. With this you get 14 days free play which allows you to explore a lot and get up to level 20. If you like it well enough to purchase the game, the "Battle Chest" (including base game and first expansion) is available at most game shops or online... and comes with (another) 30 days free play.

I'd offer (after all, there are benefits to me if you enjoy playing and stick with it) but my WoW account is linked to US servers and the 6+ hour time difference is not particularly conducive for "end game" (high level) play.

Here is the website for WoW, from there you can sign up for a trial yourself which gives 10 days free play. Personally, if I were starting over, I'd go that route, make and try a few things within that time period but don't get too "engaged" in the characters themselves... and look for a recruitment from another player and start over with the 14 days "free trial" again. (There are other benefits to that route for you as well... but really only stand out if you play with that person on a regular basis.)

Oh... and a word of caution:
If / when you do get involved with MMOs, there is a huge debate with folks on both sides of the issue with regards to "RMT"... real money exchanging hands for in-game gain. Many of the game companies frown upon it, Blizzard (owner of WoW) bans accounts that become involved with it in any way.
IF you want to use real money for in-game gain, WoW is not for you.

Second Life offers RMT and indeed encourages it. EverQuest 2 has specific servers set up where you can buy virtual goods / services with real money. RMT is treated differently in Asia than in the US, many of the MMOs that are run from there "allow" RMT. I think here in Europe it is kinda iffy but I'm not entirely sure.

Not played Mass Effect 2 but a few of my Xbox buddies are and are loving it. I'm still addicted to Modern Warfare 2

Actually considering making a WoW return for the Cataclysm stuff, it looks pretty good. Shame they're giving gnomes a healing class
