| | | It pays to improve your wordpower - an give rice to the hungry
Someone sent me this http://www.freerice.com/index.php. Not only can you see how many words you know, each time you get one correct you donate 10 grains of rice. Doesn't sound like a lot, but get 100 words correct and you have given 1000 grains. On top of that you get a rating. My vocab knowledge is 43 and I'm just going to see if I can up it.
Do support it. You know it makes sense |

Can this be real? It seems rather improbable. Grains of rice donated (to whom?) for words defined correctly.
(Managed to achieve the 44th level. But does it have an end?)

Well I see sponsoring at the bottom of the page when you get words right. I guess the idea is that the more people visit the site (hitcount), the more advertisements are shown, the more this organization gets sponsorship money. Well, that's my guess how it works.....
You can check the FAQ on the page, I'm too lazy to read it.

From the FAQ: | Quote: | | | | Who pays for the donated rice?
The rice is paid for by the advertisers whose names you see on the bottom of your vocabulary screen. This is regular advertising for these companies, but it is also something more. Through their advertising at FreeRice, these companies support both learning (free vocabulary for everyone) and reducing hunger (free rice for the hungry). We commend these companies for their participation at FreeRice. If FreeRice has the rice to give, why not give it all away right now?
FreeRice is not sitting on a pile of rice―you are earning it 10 grains at a time. Here is how it works. When you play the game, advertisements appear on the bottom of your screen. The money generated by these advertisements is then used to buy the rice. So by playing, you generate the money that pays for the rice donated to hungry people. | | | | | |

| | | Free Rice needs your LEET english!
Well I didn't say your english was bad since most of you are from england anyway but here's a great way to make it even better: http://www.freerice.com/
for every right answer 10 grains of rice will feed a hungry mouth and guess what... it's costing you not even a penny
Now let's see how many grains you can raise |

According to this article on the BBC news enough money has been raised to feed 50,000 people for 1 day. Nice work.

Get me, I am a modern day Mother Theresa*
*Of course I am not comparing myself to the Saint of Calcutta, although she did have some very curious ideas of the giving of Morphine to dying people IMHO she had a lot to answer for

For those of you who don't feel confident enough to use the vocabulary site, there's the hunger site at: www.thehungersite.com which will donate a whole cup of rice when you simply click on the button of the start page.
I have made it a point to visit the page almost every day for the past couple of years.

No, they're both still at the rice-washing stage.
