The Franklin Institute is actually a science museum - pretty cool and would be fun for kids (or nerds even in you are in your 30s like me).
The "Old City" area has a lot of nice restaurants, bars, and clubs. I think there is a good comedy club but forget the name, maybe Helium. There is also South Street which is the more alternative section but also has many bars and little shops. Finally, you should go to get an authentic Philly cheese steak (it should be Geno's or Pat's but this is a long debate). The area of town looks a bit sketchy, but I have never has an issue there. You will also pass through the italian market on the way there, can get good olives, sausages, cheeses, etc.
Have fun
