the cover thread

as a spin-off of the 'song of the day' thread, how about a 'cover of the day' thread?

criteria: covers that or as good or better than the original (in the posters humble opinion) or that show an original/unexpected take on the original.

maybe a good idea to mention the original artist in your post, might not always be evident.

Since I'm in a good mood, I'll start with a happy one: Seu Jorge covering David Bowie's Life on Mars? (from the movie A life aquatic):

Re: the cover thread

Really like the cover of bowie.

I have a lot of covers which I could put up here, some ive already put up in the song of the day thread....but still cant resist based on the title of this thread.

Ill give just a few:-

Damien Rice & Ray Lamontagne "to love somebody"

Mat Weddle "hey ya"

Barefoot "born slippy"

Re: the cover thread

The worst cover I have heard in recent years is Comfortably-Numb , murdered by the Scissor Sisters. They should be taken out and shot. An atmospheric deep moody piece swelling into a soaring guitar solo is reduced by some talentless tossers to some pop backbeat drivel.

Hayseed Dixie are great. They make me laugh. Even the Young brothers like them...they offer a completely different bluegrass arrangement of it.

"Walk On By" , covered by The Stranglers, one of the best bands ever in the history of the world ever ever ever. I cant even remember which female crooner did it first...

I've got nice copies of both Travis and Fountains of Wayne doing Britney's "Hit me baby one more time". Both are differently done and expose a really great song.

Re: the cover thread

I was going to post Ben Folds' cover of Dr Dre's "Bitches Ain't Shit" but I think I already put that in Song of the Day, so here's a complete cracker...

Roxy Music - Jealous Guy

One of only two John Lennon covers that I consider to be on a par with the original, and criminally this was Roxy Music's ONLY UK number 1...!

Coldplay's cover of 'You Only Live Twice' was pretty good, even if they are just pasteurised Radiohead.

Re: the cover thread

Two best covers are-

Joe Cocker - 'A little help from my friends'
a cover of The Beatles.

Jimi Hendrix - 'All along the Watchtower'
a cover of Bob Dylan.
