AbFab's 10 tips to quit smoking in 10 days

I smoked 30 - 40 a day for 15 years and quit many years ago.
For me it was reaching age 30. I said to myself "I either smoke the rest of my life without guilt - or quit". I quit.

You don't need books read or tapes to listen to or hypnotism. YOU CAN QUIT. If you feel as a smoker you are being talked down to, then don't read any further and keep on smoking.

Here's some points I used. Maybe this will help someone.
  1. You can do it. This is vital! There is only one person who can do this and that's you. If you are not 100% committed to quitting - you won't. You must:
    - believe 100% that:
    a) you want to quit and
    b) that you can.
  2. Chose your time. It's pointless trying with a holiday coming up and meals out with other smokers. A milestone in life can help. But equally it could be today.
  3. Don't quit alone. If you have a partner who smokes or co-worker(s). It will be so much easier if you both quit together.
  4. Don't quit overnight. Some claim to have done this. I couldn't. Run down your smoking over about 10 days. I was on one a-day for about a week.
  5. Change you habits. If you usually have a cigarette with a coffee, then have a tea or water instead. If you usually sit at the table and smoke after a meal, get up and do the washing up instead. Socially, you should avoid places where you usually smoked until you have really quit.
Break all the times in the day when you usually smoke. If you usually smoke at the tram stop, stand somewhere else, or walk to the next stop instead. Simple tricks, but they work.
  6. Exercise. You will find that you have extra capacity for exercise - and eating. Food will taste better and your body can use it better without nicotine, so some weight gain is almost inevitable. As you wind down your smoking, wind up you exercise. Walk to work, start jogging, join a gym. You're going to feel great.
  7. You will need a crutch. I used sugar-free gum whenever I craved a cigarette. Others use nicotine gum or patches. But it does seem odd to me to put the poison in your body another way. I know someone who was addicted to nicotine gum until it caused problems with inflamed gums.
  8. Tell everyone you are quitting. This will
    a) stop them offering you cigarettes. And
    b) make you commitment to quitting stronger as you will not want to lose face by failure. You might even post here if you are going to quit.
  9. If you have a relapse don't worry. It will happen: you're out for a meal and you've had a few drinks and someone offers you a cigarette. You smoke it and so as not to seem mean you buy a pack and next morning you have a half empty pack to finish. Wrong. Throw the pack away and go back to point 1).
  10. Quitting will be a massive achievement. Remember this always. You can, and will, break the hold of the tobacco companies and their pernicious drugs. You will be healthier, richer, smell better, be more attractive and stand every chance of living longer and avoiding a premature and humilating slow death.
If you have any more quit-tips, please post them here.

In the months that I've been visiting this forum this is most useful post I've ever seen you make on this subject.. thank you. Green blob on way.

People are ex-smokers on this forum and we know that the majority of smokers also want to give up.

So SHARE the knowledge, it's all helpful stuff..

thanks AbFab, similar to you, I am in the same situation, although the milestone is a few km's down the road & kicks off next month.

my doctor has advised that I should read Alan Carr on this & has also offered me acupuncture. As our resident non-smoking advocate/guru, can you give me any feedback on this ?

I have never smoked my whole life, but after that list I feel so stressed that I started thinking... its impossible to keep to that list... I need a fag!!!!

I mean.. whats the alternative... washing up? walk to the next stop? excercise...??

Holy crap... I understand why its so hard to quit now.

This is a key point, don't have cigarettes lying around the house.

If you can get manage to smoke occasionally without getting drawn back into "full time" smoking good for you, benefits of both worlds

All that these 'helps' will do is convince you that you can do it. I don't think you need anyone's help but you own. Believe and you will quit...

Break the habit. Don't drink beer. Try a gin and tonic or someother new drink you don't associate with smoking a cigarette...

Go out and make it your mission to get absolutely plastered but not smoke, just once. It'll be easier to sit in the pub and not smoke after that.

I found this a slippery slope too far. I was 30 - 40 a day smoker. All or nothing...

I cheated on this one last time I gave up but it's a bit of a stupid answer but works.

Don't drink pints, buy bottles of beer x2 at a time. If you hands are constantly full and you're mouth constantly occupied you cannot light a ciggy.

I know, I know. Dangerous but worked a couple of times for me and got me through the barrier of cigarettes and alcohol

The only thing I can compare it to is going on a diet and then heading down paddy's telling yourself you are gonna have no booze and nothing to eat.

Then waking up the next morning having had 10 pints, 2 swiss burgers with fries and a kebab on the way home.

How many years of non smoking before lungs fully recover? Would lungs of an X-smoker who has not smoked for 20 years be same as a person who never smoked?

Re: AbFab's 10 tips to quit smoking in 10 days

Great post AbFab

I gave up 2 and a half years ago and I can say that the way I gave up ticked most of your points. Didn't follow the excercise bit! I would recommed that point strongly as you do gain weight

I actually sacrificed my social life for 6 months and stopped going to my local 3 nights a week, it was the drinking and socialising in the pub that was the hardest, but I feel that 6 months sacrifice was worth it. Since giving up smoking I actually drink a lot less, my vice has always been vodka and coke and I could never have a vodka and coke in one hand without a cig in the other, giving up smoking meant drinking was less enjoyable, I have gone from too many units a week to remember to about 2 units a week now, so all in all a healthier life style change

I can also agree with Ab Fabs point re not to give up over night, i spent 5 years trying to quit, i'd quit for 6 months then start again etc... the day I decided to quit I was smoking only about 2 cigarettes a day compared to 20 a day previously

The downside to becoming an ex smoker is that you do become an annoying smug anti smoker

apparently it takes only 5 years for your lungs to fully repair - I am half way there!

It depends how much the lungs were damaged. But it seems that the time for full recovery is measured in years.

However, you will feel the improvement within a few weeks...

or maybe a different angle, when somebody offers you a smoke when you're in the pub; say No and reward yourself with a beer. If enough people will offer you a cigarette, you get plastered without smoking.
