Ahhh ....... Toothache

A couple of months ago, whilst eating, I slipped with the fork and a prong stabbed into the middle of a tooth (which I think still has an old amalgam filling in) with a sharp twang.

Since then, there has only an occasional niggle, so I never got round to getting my dentist to check it.

Tonight, however, it has really started to give me gip. I've already had a couple of shandies, so strong painkillers are out, and now I'm on my second tumbler of 18yr. old malt - bit of a waste to use it as a mouthwash, but I do swallow, afterwards.

Unfortunately relief is only temporary. Looks like a drunken stupor to get through the night.

Re: Ahhh ....... Toothache

Poor you, I feel for you. Had something similar some time ago. The thing was, it became bad at night and was good during the day, so I kept delaying the dentist visit - don't do that. One night it became so bad that absolutely nothing helped. Oh, what a night I had!

Go to the dentist tomorrow.

There's a few on duty emergency dentists available day and night, weekend included. Normally if you call your normal dentist the answering machine will give you the emergency number.

But they are even more expensive than normal-hours dentists though...

Re: Ahhh ....... Toothache

Do you think that your filling may have come out?

The Apothekes here probably sell stuff to help numb teeth (and gums). It would probably be something that contains Benzocaine. I know that, in the US, there are quite a few over-the-counter products sold for tooth pain.

But definitely get to the dentist ASAP!
Benzocaine

Benzocaine is the active ingredient in Orajel and Anbesol products for toothache pain, with concentrations ranging from 10 percent in regular strength formulas up to 20 percent in severe pain formulas. Dent's Toothache Drops also contain benzocaine, which numbs the nerves in the area where it's applied, providing pain relief for a time. Toothache sufferers should not use these products if they've ever had an allergic reaction to any anesthetic in the "caine" family -- that is, a word with the suffix "caine."

Re: Ahhh ....... Toothache

Always have a stock pile of the super strength ibuprofen, the type you can't normally get without prescription. They have them at most dentists behind the counter for emergency severe pain and managing pain relief post procedures.

They tend to manage all pain for two hours. Don't worry about alcohol intake, there is no impact. Tried and tested many a time.

Two hours later you can take super strength paracetamol and cycle on that basis every two hours to manage the pain. I have hyper sensitive nerves in my mouth, the numbing injections take maximum doses to take hold on me, and even then I still can feel pain in some procedures. But this remedy has worked pretty effectively for me.

A stock pile of "caine" product is always helpful of course, some varieties help with pain but not with getting to sleep.

Yes, but absolutely do not drink alcohol with paracetamol.

Where is TiMow?
Maybe he's still under other influence of whatever pain relief he took, or he's in a state of shock from when the dentist gave him the bill.

Re: Ahhh ....... Toothache

Yep still here, grinning and bearing it, necking down Dafalgans by the dozen.

Thanks for concern and suggestions - pretty sure the filling didn't come out, but possibly slightly dislodged, and has been letting in crap over time.

Unfortunately, I've been busy today buying a moped for my 13yr. old, which my wife found and wanted to move quickly on, before someone else snapped it up.

Painkillers have worked to a degree, but will endeavour to get to the dentist tomorrow, as my whiskey's running low

........ and yes, I found out the hard way, in my yoof, that paracetamol and booze aren't good bedfellows.

The over the counter dose is 400mg. The medical maximum dose is 800mg. If you wanted the maximum dose, you just take two OTC doses (or 4x200mg).

Unless you want to harm your liver - possibly permanently, possibly terminally - do not take more than 1000mg of paracetamol in a four hour period. Certainly not with alcohol. Alcohol and parcetamol are both toxic to the liver.

Can you get Anbesol in Switzerland? Or what is closest to it? The brand name?

Go to a pharmacy and ask. If it doesn't exist here, you can tell the pharmacist that it contains Lidocaine Hydrochloride, Chlorocresol and Cetylpyridinium Chloride, from which he/she should be able to suggest an alternative.

What kind of pain do you have? There are plenty of dentists/hygienists on here, who are happy to help you.

Some dental pain is better to address earlier, than later.

All the best.
