Re: Tesla Model S

There's quite a mix in that list there Tom, not sure Hyundais and Dacias should really be compared with Range Rovers!

If you've got $$$ to burn, you probably won't buy a Dacia, even if it is higher than a Land Rover Sport on your list.

Fair point though, people in the USA are looking for different cars to people in the UK, who are both looking for very different cars to people in mainland Europe. I think everyone worldwide in cities would prefer fewer emissions however.

Not sure about that. Certainly not everyone.

The yummy mummies who drive their massive 4 x 4s to collect their kids from the International school could easily manage in a much smaller car.

P.S.

There are two Teslas in our little street now so they are getting more popular.

Why exactly is your U.S. review so much better than a British review? It's all pretty subjective and if you like a particular car, just keep looking through reviews until you find a favourable one.
And LR have done it again, this time taking overall title, where as it has taken the SUV title every year since 2004 (except for 2009). And IMHO is the best all rounder you can buy - it is luxurious to do the Chelsea school and hard working enough to pick up a stag carcass off a Scottish moor.

(I have lost count of the number of TV programmes where a Disco is the car of choice - Countryfile is awash with them, every food programme which has them go into the countryside, car renovation programmes (towing)).

(And yes, I did just sell mine!)

(Holy Cow - that is a large fuel bill!!!)

Dodgy, it's all part of the set, nothing more nothing less, it fits in with the image they are trying so desperately to portray and maintain.

Exactyl how many people take their kids to school in the LR and then rush off to pick up their fresh lunch from a Scottish moor ? They mnay use the same type of car, but certainly they don't use the same car !

My sister used to. Her Discovery is over twenty years old and still going strong to tow trailers containing livestock across rough ground.

Interesting why you sister "used to" (past tense) only to finish in "still going strong" (present tense)

It's fine where it is. Just think how many groans you would have got here by now for your pro-V8 stance (not that I'm against V8s in any way whatsoever, as you know!).

this is about 95k CHF of fuel in 11 years.
Not including much higher repairs and maintenance compared to EVs.

How is a Tesla "too expensive" then?

In 11 years a Tesla is likely to go through two batteries -- how much is that going to cost? And no-one knows yet what other costs will typically crop up over that period.

Battery life, range and convenience of "refuelling" (and lack of choice, but that will change over time) are still the biggest barriers for me. If these get sorted some time, I'll happily convert to electric vehicles.

Re: Tesla Model S

Degradation is 1-1.5% a year, so after 10 years, worst case scenario, let's say you go from 300 miles to 255, might be a deal breaker.

The battery is guaranteed for 8 years, so let's so it goes kaputt after 8 years and 1 day and you need to buy a new one - do you really think in the intervening 8 years the batteries on offer won't be considerably more dense and therefore have a much superior range? This is pretty much my plan tbh, see the state of affairs after 5 or 6 years and swap the battery out if it makes sense.

Given that the Model X uses the same battery system as the Model S, and this can now be retrofitted to the Roadster, it seems clear to me that it is also going to be the basis for the Model III and probably future Teslas, so given they only have one thing to R&D on, I would be shocked if we don't see at a minimum 50% more battery density in 5 years.

Elon said he "expects" to see a 1000-km range car in "about two years". And who else could manufacture it other than Tesla?

The Porsche Mission E is a concept car, of which roughly 0.00% make it into production.

Their CEO might as well have got his son in kindergarten to draw "the car of the future"...maybe he did.

I;m not sure about that. If they want to compete with the Tesla then they need a four door saloon.
