iOS developer / app coding

Hi Guys,

I'm looking to build an iOS app but after investing about 6 months on trying picking up some coding skills I got stuck at "Hello world"

I've now made up my mind that I need to hire some developer to help me and was looking in odesk or rent a coder but everyone seems like they know everything and yet I don't know if they know what I need.

So I'll ask here. The app I would like to build is similar to Kayak (but way better!) If I want to outsource the building of such an app what are the key skills a developer should have? C++, xcode, cocoa, unity, etc etc?

grateful for any help.

cheers

Well the first thing to clarify is do you already have all the backend coding and infrastructure in place? There is a lot of stuff going on in the backend in Kayak that is not oblivious from the App. I would not be surprised to find that building the app is maybe 25% to 30% of the effort involved in delivering the final solution.

this is a good point. the infrastructure and backend is somewhat in place or being figured out by a friend of mine. we are looking at options like using semantics3 or other similar open APIs for product data.

Hi

try fiverr.com, there you will find a lot of experts doing the service at cheap price.

Before starting a native app dev maybe consider a web app instead

Re: iOS developer / app coding

If you are hiring a developer to make an app then you have to choose wisely - in my work i've created numerous apps for clients but never done the actual coding myself.

After lots of disappointment (alot of developers out there promising the earth and not delivering, or *trying* to go way over budget after massively underquoting just to get the job) we now work with a pretty good guy who is in the UK - but it's still not cheap and not sure if it is out of the reach of "real" person (not a corporate client) - PM me if you want the details.

If you want something quick and dirty then fiverr alright, but as soon as you add complexity (backend, etc) costs can spiral...

Some app developers will do a fixed price solution - but again you need to be careful that you pre-define in great detail what the deliverables are.

You also need to consider how you make the app cross-platform (at least iOS and Android). Despite my hatred of Apple, because of the wide variety of devices getting an app to scale right on an Android device can be a bit of a pain in the arse.

Anyway, good luck! I could really do with a decent app for flights as I now hate Skyscanner with a passion!

cheaper can mean they take longer and don't deliver what you want, remember there are a lot of good IT jobs, someone worth it will expect normal payment. I know someone if you would like someone in the know to check over plans and such, just send me a PM

Re: iOS developer / app coding

I have developed iPhone and Android apps in the past, I have a bunch of friends that say they need an app and would pay me to do it.
The problem is that most of them don't have a clue of the complexity of a Server-Client software.

A simple app can cost you 100k a good one with a platform can pass 1m easy. Of course there are shortcuts and hacks like using website or outsource to a lower quality cheaper developers but you end up with something that cannot be used.

Get a coder is a waste of time.
