its very amusing (to me at least) that people get there knickers in a twist about this

yet allow google, apple, facebook, twitter, microsoft, whatsapp etc etc to harvest as much info about them as possible, even 'reading' there emails and texts to target ads to them (at the very least) with no transparency and they are free to sell the information on to the highest bidder.
Yes, but you agreed to all that in the terms and conditions that you signed up to.

I didn't sign-up to the US government forcing software manufacturers to put in back-door entry codes nor to collect information about me in an illegal way, etc. etc.

I haven't really got my knickers in a twist TBH, but I do think this is wrong and is not the same as the collection of marketing information that you are describing.

Re: Snowden STFU!

And the US government has been known to do a few things like, oh: leading internet smear campagns against people online (revealed in Snowden's leaks), framing Geneva bankers into turning informants after pushing them to drive drunk, extraditing and torturing people without a warrant, and on and on. Something tells me I don't have to worry about Facebook doing the same.

Re: Snowden STFU!

Isn't the whole point this though: The USA wants to be seen as the leader of the western world, or even the global force of all goodness, democracy, bald headed eagles and apple pie, yet here their own security services are illegally and randomly gathering intel on their own population?

There's no point in calling all the dictatorships as the "axis of evil" if you're employing the same techniques domestically that your so called democracy is trying to rise above.

Maybe this is naïve, but based on the events of 9/11, everyone became a "valid threat" in the eyes of a paranoid American government whose security services had either simply not known about, nor foreseen the tragic attacks of that date. In a classic "can't kick the cat, so we'll kick the dog" reaction, anyone sporting a beard or having an Arabic name became a suspect.

What Snowden told us was that the USA is right up there with China and Russia in terms of domestic surveillance. It tells me that the Stars and Stripes has no moral right to claim to be the free nation of which its forefathers created 240 years ago.

Re: Snowden STFU!

Well said Assassin, since 9/11 the US has gone from mildly loony to seriously dangerous. Well done Snowden! Isn't someone trying to give him the Nobel Peace Prize? And wasn't he on active spy duty in Geneva?

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-22837100 quotation below,
Despite his lack of formal qualifications, it is said that his computer wizardry allowed him to quickly rise through intelligence ranks.
By 2007, he was given a CIA post with diplomatic cover in Geneva.
Mr Snowden told the Guardian: "Much of what I saw in Geneva really disillusioned me about how my government functions and what its impact is in the world. I realised that I was part of something that was doing far more harm than good."
Mr Snowden said he had considered going public earlier, but waited to see whether President Barack Obama's election in 2008 would change the US approach. "[Mr Obama] continued with the policies of his predecessor," he said.

I think he is extremely brave and probably rather naiive.

AFAIK, the Nobel prizes are a bit biased toward the US.
I can't find an online reference, but I read somewhere that the Nobel prices open a lot of doors for Swedish Scientists in the US...
It wasn't a big deal, when the prized were awarded to dissidents and other people in Africa, Asia or South-America that weren't openly communist.
But nowadays, I'd say it's next to impossible.

Has there ever been a Nobel peace price that was a slap in the face of the US?

Re: Snowden STFU!

I must say from the many forums I visit TPTB in America are sure spending a lot of money astroturfing.

Not so much written on the bit I love the most about how what is claimed to be a support monkey gets paid $122k + bonus taking him to $200k working from home in Hawaii.

Astroturfers: please explain it like I am 5 or something.

Objection. Before snowden you could pretty much rely on being labeled a conspiracy theorist if you mentioned what "people already knew". Not anymore.

Re: Snowden STFU!

He's trying to get people talking about him again.

I could have sworn he was only given a 1 year visa by Russia, which should expire anytime soon.

He's just thinking about that when he's being provocative.

Provocative? I guess you're trying to play at being a brit. If you attended UK history classes in your formative years you will know there have been full scale European wars triggered over much less. The War of Jenkins' Ear which ended up morphing into the War of Austrian Succession, for example (and Jenkins never really lost his ear anyways.)

Provocative, LOL, what a plank.

Re: Snowden STFU!

According to a story in the Berner Zeitung, legal concerns have been clarified which would allow a secure entry into Switzerland for Ed Snowden, if he so decides:

http://www.bernerzeitung.ch/schweiz/...story/29536296

A technical article published by a Fribourg law professor a week ago concludes that he should be able to apply for asylum here under the Geneva refugee convention regarding politically persecuted persons. Separately, he could also be granted protection for human rights reasons.

http://sui-generis.ch/2

Although it might be safer for him under Putin's protection in Moscow than in Switzerland, should be seek refuge in Switzerland he would likely find a ready welcome by Americans and ex-Americans who have a strong distaste for the US government.

Snowden, of all people, knows best that at least some of his new "friends" would actually be CIA agents.
He was one himself, after all, in 2007.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Snowden#CIA
As a guy being wanted by Uncle Sam, I'd have serious problems going for a drink with an American in Zurich (or anywhere else in Switzerland).
Nothing beats waking-up with a massive hangover, realizing you're in a Gulfstream G650 currently descending onto a small, private Airfield outside of Washington, D.C.

While there are probably a lot more CIA agents in Russia and Moscow in total, chances of finding true friends there may actually be greater.

Re: Snowden STFU!

RT reports: "Snowden ‘to get Swiss asylum if he testifies on NSA’

Switzerland has reportedly decided it will not extradite National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden to the US if he comes to testify against the NSA’s spying activities, Swiss media said.
In the document, titled “What rules are to be followed if Edward Snowden is brought to Switzerland and then the United States makes an extradition request,” Switzerland’s Attorney General stated that Snowden should be guaranteed safety if he arrives to the country to testify, Sonntags Zeitung reported.
In particular, the report proposes to ensure the whistleblower’s safety by inviting him as a witness to a parliamentary hearing focusing on the NSA’s surveillance practices.
In the document, the authority said that Switzerland does not extradite a US citizen, if the individual’s “actions constitute a political offense, or if the request has been politically motivated,” Swiss ATS news agency reported.
Snowden’s safety can thus be guaranteed if it is ruled that the charges against him have a “predominantly political character,” the document concluded.
The only obstacle for that could be “higher-level government commitments,” the Office of the Attorney General said, adding that it must be verified if such obligations do, in fact, exist. "

The last sentence above is important as it could obviate the legal basis.

Personally I think he is better off in Russia. I mean, the guy might be allowed immunity from extradition, but will he able to open a bank account in Switzerland?
