Hello all Americans! I wasn´t even aware of this until a couple years ago, but there is an organization called the Taxpayer Advocacy Panel (improveirs.org) that collects feedback from the public about their issues with the IRS and makes recommendations to the IRS.
This year is the first year that a citizen volunteer has been selected to represent international taxpayers. I applied and was recently elected to serve a three year term.
I´d love to hear from you about things you have experienced and how you think the IRS could improve. The TAP looks for issues that effect the broader group of taxpayers abroad, which they refer to as "systemic issues". Please comment here with your experiences and ideas!
We will be reviewing the list of items on the 29th of January to see which will be the first we will tackle. To be clear, I am not a tax professional (I´m an IT professional), so I wont be able to answer any specific tax law questions, but I can point you in the right direction.
For those who have individual problems, please look up The National Taxpayer Advocate, Nina Olson, who is just fantastic and really does an amazing job fighting for the equal and fair treatment of all taxpayers.
If you are interested in legislative changes, I suggest you read the latest reports from Nina which highlights what she sees as the biggest issues: http://www.irs.gov/Advocate/Reports-to-Congress
I also think for those interested in tax reform, the latest brief from the Senate is an interesting read, check page 282: http://online.wsj.com/public/resourc...axes121514.pdf
Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you.
