Your worst guest/host experience

The thread about the birthday boy's parent billing a no show made me think about what is a good guest or host. I have been lucky to not have so many negative stories but I do remember one.

It was my birthday and one guest and his girlfriend arrived 2 hours before the party and were already drunk. end up in a fight between the two before the party even started.

An other story is from a friend of mine who was invited to a dinner and the hostess kept emailing the guests complaining about all the work she had to do, the difficulties to get around some people's allergies, etc.

Re: Your worst guest/host experience

If she hadn't spent all of her time emailing she would have had more time to prepare for the party.

I went to a party in Berlin years ago where the hosts (not good friends of mine) had put a camera in the WC and set up a screen in the livingroom for viewing.

Re: Your worst guest/host experience

we recently had a great christmas party. friends from a city further away asked to stay over but (conveniently ) we had someone else staying. long story short, the guest we were supposed to had ended up leaving with someone (the party was THAT good ) and these friends invited themselves to stay and we didn't have the heart to say no, but i really felt like it wouldn't be a great idea. fast forward to everyone else gone by 2:30, them going to the fridge and opening up a bottle of champagne and us staying up until about 4. ok, that was fine.

but the next day, we had plans, we said so, they asked for us to leave our keys for them to stay longer and leave when they were ready and we said, sorry but no. as i waited for the female part of the couple to get ready and take up the bathroom, she came out asking if i had any more of the makeup remover she found in my cabinet as she just used the last of it needless to say, we actually liked the two quite a lot before, but not everyone is meant to be a houseguest and they aren't bad people, just a bit clueless-

i think if i behaved the same way at their place it wouldn't be an issue for them. but maybe i was just too hungover, it was an issue for me. now we only see them out and never again to stay over...

Re: Your worst guest/host experience

We went to a party in Oxford, arriving bang on time at 8 pm. The hostess opened the door and apologised,

"The party is cancelled, I am sorry. I made a cake with lots of cannabis and some guests came early, and ate all the cake. Then they thought it fun to jump out of the first floor bedroom window, and then run around, & come back in through the front door. That was bad enough, but then one of them was sick all down the stair carpet, and I just couldn't cope anymore, I sent them all home. Sorry, no party, good night"

It's not my experience, thankfully, but this EF user had, apparently, quite a rough experience with his host . . .

Re: Your worst guest/host experience

I once had a dinner party on a warm summers evening, but left the salmon mousse too long out of the fridge, resulting in an uninvited, unwelcome guest turning up, later, wanting to cut some long grass or something.

Re: Your worst guest/host experience

An other one back in my early twenties. A friend of mine wanted to change her life and I invited to stay at my place until she could fine hers.

I was living with my then boyfriend and she used to go to the toilet with the door open, walked in the apart in her underwear, etc. never helped to clean, never cooked. She lived on peanut butter sandwiches. Ex and me would cook and feel bad so share our meals with her and she never joined in to help with the cooking or the grocery part.

She stayed 1 1/2 month on my couch until I had enough and found her a place because she wasn't looking.

Re: Your worst guest/host experience

I once flew all the way to China to visit a friend..well former friend of mine. After a while, he accused me of going through his stuff, namely a collection of factory catalogs which he collected to summarize for his website. Obviously, I had no interest in his catalogs, nor would I never go through his stuff but he ended up kicking me out of the apartment.

On another occasion, I also flew 1000s of miles visiting another friend. He was very wealthy and he put me up in one of his luxurious apartments. Needless to say, I wasn't even given a key or a phone number to reach him. One of his maids would bring me food throughout the day and he would pick me up in the evening to have dinner. Along came his Mickey Mouse girlfriend who carried around a Hello Kitty rod. On the third evening, I've had enough and ventured out on my own.

...I have ample stories just alike of "friends" disappointing me...but life goes on.

Let me tell you something about so called friends. They are like ice-cream. As long as things are cool, everything sticks together but as soon as matters heat up a little, everything starts to melt.

Well I'm lucky I guess...I have friends in several countries and they were great hosts when I visited them and good guests when they visited me. Except maybe one couple who kept teasing each other about something that happened between them, but that was only embarrassing because they wanted me to tell the other how wrong he/she was and I preferred to stay neutral.

Same here, have been very lucky with guests over the years. 1 PhD student we hosted for our local Uni in UK turned out to be a total nightmare- but apart from that- so many great experiences.

Re: Your worst guest/host experience

Many years ago I hosted a student who seemed to be quite a pleasant girl - very polite and beautifully dressed

What I did not realise was that she was part of a very well known family in Italy which manufactured cars. Imagine our surprise when one afternoon 4 Italian plated cars containing many of her relatives turned up!!

I imagine they were checking up where their baby was staying and thank goodness they liked us, but to suddenly be invaded by about 8 Italians was a real shock.

Re: Your worst guest/host experience

Once I was asked by a former work colleague to help her out with the move. I arrived at around 9am, carried stuff like a mule until around 10pm and then she didn't even have the common courtesy of driving me home, which was only 15-20min away. So I had to take public transport and because of the bad connections out in the sticks, I got home around midnight. lol

I got stories back to back.

..this other time, I got invited to a party by a bunch of "friends" in a canyon. Upon arrival they ignored me for much of the evening until they forgot about me and went home. Thankfully, I was able to hitch a ride home by a friendly passerby as otherwise, it would have been a very, very long walk home.

Re: Your worst guest/host experience

Whilst living in Portugal in the most magical place on Earth ( Sintra), I had the brilliant idea to share our guest house with the International School's visiting author. I thought he would be totally inspired by the amazing views of the Moorish ruins and castles, and the aromatic exotic vegetation.

Silly me even invited a large group from the school to welcome him at a private dinner. Then, I drove him all over Lisbon, organized others to fetch and care for our children, missed our children's usual sports and club activities while shopping for his special meals, cooking and serving them, on white starched tablecloths, etc...

Our 9 year old son was a budding writer and avid reader, so I had imagined the thrill to actually know a true children's author.

The guy was so unappreciative, announcing his time for coffee etc, as if I were his personal butler!!! Once back to our home, he only emerged from his room for meals and never even acknowledged the existence of our son!

The worst came at the end when he laughed about not knowing anything about the local currency!!!

Of course, I had footed all the bills. Grrrrr.

THEN...as he walked out the door to enter the taxi, he said I should know our dog smelt bad!
