Berlin - where to stay for a week?

In April, reasonably priced. Two adults wanting to discover the city. All ideas very much appreciated!

Tried this one last August with my teenage daughter: fun, wacky, super clean and very friendly. Location was fine too. Loved it!

Can't advise 1 Hôtel or other- but the area. Stay in the old part of East Berlin called Prenzlauerberg- beautiful old houses and a true a 'bohèmian' atmosphere.

Said daughter went wild with eccentric, "cheap" clothes shops.

Re: Berlin - where to stay for a week?

Spent nearly 4 months there in 92 on a teacher exchange- just loved it. It's changed a lot since then- but the great atmosphere is still there- small markets, great little individual boutiques, cafés and restaurant, Asian and all sorts of foods- wonderful.

+1...fabulous!!!

We stayed here: http://www.hotel-zarenhof.de/

It's apartments/hotel with a Russian twist, in the middle of Prenzlauerberg. We LOVED it. While there, go check out my favorite bar in the neighborhood, the Rote Lotte, just around the corner from the Zarenhof.

Time to go back for a visit...

Yes, that is very convenient (she says, having a flat in Neu Westend )
It really will bring you from West to East with sight seeing points along the line

Staying near a major train junction is a huge advantage in mobility, e.g., Alexanderplatz, Potsdamer, Zoo or even Mitte. It would help to learn the 3 different train systems beforehand: S, M & U, and the bus lines as well.

I love this neighbourhood. The presence of so many Americans gave me a warm, at-home feeling.

Re: Berlin - where to stay for a week?

Anyway... So we just got back yesterday, had a fantastic time, stayed at Hotel Catalonia, which is located between U8 and U2. A very good experience with the exception of everything in our first room, including the bed, stinking of pot, they gave us a different room and bottle of cava to apologize. Very easy to get around, great sightseeing, even made it to the Zoo, great food at the fraction of Swiss prices, the shopping is good as well, having snacks and cakes at the 6th floor of the KaDeWe is an experience on its own and I highly recommend to all the foodies out there.

Mr. Aleydis liked it here: http://restaurant-pasternak.de/en/ so much, we ended up go there 3 times, including for Sunday brunch. Also, the dinner here was top: http://www.daitokai.de/index.php?en_daitokai-berlin

I had my Saturday Brunch 2 blocks away. Did you notice the street market on Kollwitzstrasse?

Berlin definitely has a vibe and Zeitgeist that is harder to sense in Switzerland. I love how the whole neighborhood comes out onto their streets in great weather, and strolls around.

I was just browsing the Internet for my next trip. Wondering if a Bahncard 50 and 8 hour train rides are worth it. I'm determined to learn every train line and neighborhood in the city.

Re: Berlin - where to stay for a week?

Yep, definitely more alive than Zurich, although I expected the city to be noisier and more congested than it is for 3,5 M people. Pleasantly surprised.

Take a look here: http://www.berlin-welcomecard.de/en
We got the 5 day cards, which entitled us to various discounts, so well worth it.
