Probably a plane would be easiest.

To get between the 2 of them and depending on your fitness levels you could swim, row or take a ferry.

Re: Travel to Greece

Never accept Greek Euro coins: if Greece is expelled from the EU, the Greeks might not accept Euro coins issued by Greece.

But they could become rare and collectable, and be worth almost face value in 20 years.

Spend as little time in Athens as possible, and don't take any shit from the locals.

The view of the Acropolis from Philopappos Hill is better than the visit to the Acropolis itself.

Enjoy Plaka and Monastiraki but don't eat there: the food is expensive and crap, "in this restaurant we make our taramasalata with cheese" (actual quote).

Do not - repeat DO NOT - go anywhere near Omonia Square. It's nasty.

Watch your wallet on the metro. Do not give money to beggars.

Eat souvlaki at Thanasis. It's a legend, despite its location.

Get out of Athens at the earliest opportunity.

Re: Travel to Greece

Flights are dirt cheap now, I don't know how summer prices are going to be. ZRH-ATH return flights are below 150CHF with luggage.

I don't know why I even have to say this, but water is perfectly safe (wtf?)

Spend time in Athens to see the touristy stuff if you've never been before, and the Acropolis museum with the walk under the rock is amazing. Spend more time in Athens only with a seasoned local that can take you to all the right places.

If you want the best souvlaki without being too touristy try the Tsakalof pedestrian road in Kolonaki. Upper class neighbourhood, it's expensive but the two places there have the best souvlaki I've had.

Downtown near Syntagma can be amazing (Boukourestiou, Kolokotroni, the old parliament square) and has amazing cafes and bars. Make sure to walk near the Prime Minister's office and the Presidential Residence, get lost in the roads behind that neighbourhood and definitely have a stroll in the National Gardens.

Black duck garden, 43, Drunk Sinatra, etc are amazing bars.

Also if you want the best shave/haircut of your life, go to the 1900 Barber Shop near the British Embassy on Ploutarchou Str. I used to pay 30EUR back in 2011-2012.

If you have Greek friends that have spent quality time in Athens it can be amazing. Places like the summer bar of the Asteras Hotel in the South, Moorings in the same neighbourhood, and others in Glyfada and Vouliagmeni, or similar places in the Northern Suburbs (try the bar scene in N. Kifissia) are insane.

People go to Athens and see the metro stations filled with beggars, Omonia, and the taxi drivers that are mostly as bad as everywhere and think it's a shithole. The right side of Athens is beautiful, you just have to know where to look.

metro is very good, I would avoid buses. Taxis are quite cheap and with TaxiBeat you can hail them and see ratings etc. It's basically Uber about 2-3 years before Uber became a thing, and it's connecting professional taxi drivers to customers instead of a typical dispatch centre.

For Mykonos there is not much to say. Avoid Super Paradise unless you're a horny 20yo or of similar mentality

It's a nice island, it's difficult not to have fun, and it's expensive. That is all
I have friends that say that Greece is the place around Mykonos, to which I disagree since there are much better places to have fun and enjoy much better beaches. But to each their own.

Go forth, have fun, and get back with feedback.

We've always taken the train to Milan and flown from there. With a large family, this can make a big difference in cost.

Easyjet from there made a lot of sense, did it a couple of times myself when the GNV route was off season, but now with the stronger Franc, the cheap oil and the competition of Aegean flying regulars in ZRH, I don't think it is worth the hassle or the cost (unless there are GAs involved).

It you want to see bits of the Acropolis close up, go to the British Museum.
