Re: Looking forTravel Partner South India Dec/Jan

Dear Sbrinz,

With all due respect, I'm a 56 year old woman with a computer. I am aware of the dangers and have done my research. I travelled to North Africa alone many years ago as a naive young woman but respect for the culture and a strong sense of preservation resulted in a wonderful, culturally rich holiday and a safe return without any nasty incidents.

I understand your concerns but if my partner of 27 years has enough faith and confidence in my abilities to enjoy a trip alone, then that's good enough for me.

Anyway who's to say I wont get run over by a tram, should I stay home, or learn to look right and left before crossing the road?

Be careful, and plan ahead, or just don't do it.
And then regret you didn't go there and didn't do that? Neah, most places are much better than what they seem. But your concern is quite nice, I think.
My biggest concern would be not having someone to share my enthusiasm with. I'm the type who needs a travel partner because I can't keep my mouth shut (for too long) and love to share my impressions with someone else...
Anyway, I'm sure Oldhand is mature enough to know what to avoid doing when in a foreign place...

Have a safe trip and lots of fun, Oldhand!

Hope you have a wonderful trip Oldhand. India is not as unsafe as it appears to be in the media / internet.

Go ahead and take the bus and tge train journey - you will see another slice of Ind.

It is safe enough, as long as you are being discreet in dressing - which means tops with sleeves, bottoms below knees; behaviour - meaning try not to be conspicuous in any way ; spending - dont flash 500 Rupee notes , keep 50s and 100s handy (remember credit cards are not widely used, so you will need cash on hand)

So agree with you Oldhand - and I do envy you. Can't wait to read all about it if you ever feel inclined to write a blog.

sva great advice - but I keep getting the image of 'bottoms below the knee' lol

sva, which part/s of India would you consider 'safest'?

Do you have to get rabies shots before you go? Somehow I remember friends of mine going not too long ago and all the family had to have rabies shots.

Not any more. Leicester had a big clean up a few years ago and sent all their rabid dogs to Melton Mowbray, where they may or may not have been made into pies.

Unlike Europe, safety increases as one travels south. So Oldhand has chosen well for a first unescorted trip.

I'm undecided about the rabies shot, I'll speak to my doctor and see what he advises. Although I love animals I can't see myself approaching any in India but I'll keep an open mind when I've had all the advice.

Just asked my friend the doctor, and he says he would really have the rabies jab if he went to India- animals might approach you, even if you choose not to approach them.

I also read on various sites that if you are not far from civilisation and as long as you get the first jab within 24 hours you'd be OK. It would be a difference of having 3 jabs before I go without being bitten, or 5 jabs after being bitten.

I've checked out the hospitals and clinics where I'm going, none of them would take long to get to. I'll see what my doctor says.

Travelling in South India, it would be safe to compare other parts in India. Specially Kerala would be a lovely place for for foreigners.

Try to avoid late nights outside and avoid taking Taxi or Auto Rickshaw in Stands.

Re: Looking forTravel Partner South India Dec/Jan

As a solo female traveler, I joined onto an Intrepid trip to go through Tibet and Nepal....saved so much time on organising things myself, and got to see and experience so many other things I wouldn't have otherwise (visiting local school, staying at little homestays in the back of beyond).
Intrepid uses a lot of local transport and local guides where possible, and REALLY focuses on getting to meet locals and experience how they live.

Thanks Kiwigeek, was definitely considering one of these trips, unfortunately the dates didn't work out. I'm staying at homestays all the way and feel happy and quite excited about my choices.
