Looking forTravel Partner South India Dec/Jan

Any females out there who would love to travel to the South of India but not alone? I'm a 50+ woman who'd like to go on a trip from 16/17 Dec-6/7/8 of Jan this winter. I'm more interested in the people and their daily life then a whistle stop tour of all the monuments, naturally a balance would be nice.

There's a plethora of options including kayaking through the back waters of Kerala (luggage transported to next stop) interesting home-stays, great temples, literally all that's on offer. No large tourist tours and some lesser known places. I'm more than willing to compromise and will ensure that overnight stays, must do's and transport will be booked before going. Would like to fit in a train journey and local bus but also private driver. Naturally we could also be four woman or a woman and two guy's, no sexism here. Just want to share a room with another gal and have someone to be amazed with.

If you like travel, wont faint at the odd squat toilet and are up for an adventure, don't hesitate to get in touch.

Cheers.

I'm really excited, decided to bite the bullet and go alone. I'm hoping the total freedom will make up for a bit of anxiety until I get my bearings.

Sorry you didn't get any takers..... you're being very brave going it alone but I'm sure you'll have a whale of a time.
The trip sounds really exciting and I've always dreamed of visiting India one day.
Sadly tied to family commitments over the Winter Solstice, otherwise I'd have happily volunteered to go with you!!!!!

Your first post really made me think- and I was really tempted too. But my knee is really gving me gip at the moment and OH has been diagnosed with a slipped disc in his neck- and so it is not a good time.

So glad going on you own has not put your off- you CAN do it- and we can't wait to hear of your adventures. Bon voyage x

There are of course many guided tours you could join, and perhaps then prolong your stay after the official trip ends and you have got your bearings a little, perhaps?

I would not go to India, especially if travelling alone, https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-ad...y-and-security

Can you not take an escorted package tour, or hire a body guard?

Or go to Iran http://www.destinationiran.com/tours-to-iran ?

The south of India, where she is going, is quite safe. Here is Iran - https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-ad...y-and-security

@Oldhand I hope you have lots of fun I love Kerala and the food there.

Also don't travel to switzeland, look at the FCO advisory

https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/switzerland

Apart from street vendors / taxis quoting higher price the risk is minimal in South India. Have fun!

Kerala is known as God's own country and really it is so beautiful with all the backwaters and green cover. Puducherry or Pondicherry has a beautiful ashram with beaches. South is generally safe and people like to help. Just avoid touts and go by government approved operators and you will definitely enjoy your trip.

Thanks a lot everyone.
I have booked accommodation in 4 homestays, highly recommended by solo female travellers. Done a lot of research and intend to explore with an open heart and mind, following excellent advice from previous travellers. I'm not on a shoestring budget which I'm sure will help too.

Re: Looking forTravel Partner South India Dec/Jan

Sbrinz, I looked at a lot of escorted trips but they looked exhausting, with no room for spontaneity. The one I did like the look of was during school time so I couldn't join it.
I understand why people go down this route but spending so much time in a bus and jumping out to see one monument after the next paled in comparison when I have the opportunity to meander through a few well chosen places. Thanks for your concern though.

How's the weather down there in December?

Getting time off for that long can be quite hard unfortunately, despite the holidays in the middle.

Hi, thanks for the info. I dont qualify as I haven't got a current British passport. The e-visa doesn't apply to Swiss passport holders yet.

The weather is pleasant between 22° and 34° cooler at night. I have 2 weeks for school holiday and I'm adding an extra week on.

Re: Looking forTravel Partner South India Dec/Jan

As you are not travelling with a male companion, please observe the following "rules"

Don't use local buses. Don't walk about by yourself.

Never take an unofficial taxi from the airport. The taxi should be waiting at a taxi rank, and be fitted with a meter (which might not be working).

Always ask the hotel to order for you a car with a driver for the following day. Tell them you need the driver to act as a body guard & as a companion. Stick close to him, so other men see that you are accompanied.

Always travel first class on trains, tip the conductor when you start the journey asking him to look after you, not at the end!

A problem when travelling abroad is you do not know the local language, so you do not know exactly what is going on around you. You can walk around the corner and suddenly be in the middle of a full scale riot. With a local guide this can be avoided.

As a single woman, most local men will see you as: available, easy prey, and "up for it" & so outside your hotel you must travel with a male companion.

Years ago I lived in Malaysia for 3 years, and these places haven't become safer. We had a 5 day riot, followed by a 6 month curfew, 3 men were killed in my street. Attacks also happen against local women, they just don't get reported in the western press.

Every month in the local press a rape was reported: one memorable occasion was a group of female rubber tree workers walking off to work at 5 am. The last one in the line never arrived at the plantation, she had been kidnapped & was found a day later, dead. Her co-workers had never heard her cry out.

Be careful, and plan ahead, or just don't do it.
