about the diamond biz

what do you guys think of the diamond biz? is it as dubious as i had thought? reading some stuff now though, it seems that almost all of it is from conflict free areas. nevertheless, does it still mean that diamond companies massively exploit the countries the stones come from? is it still a world of back handers and heavy security? or not at all? or is it though? or not? or maybe it is?

Re: about the diamond biz

A friend is a diamond dealer. . About 1-2% are conflict diamonds. Most are open cast mines but a large amount are pure hard labour mined. China has taken over huge swathes of Africa with cheap labour. The Kimberly process is simply a smoke screen and can never prevent conflict/blood diamonds from entering the system.

If someone is concerned then buy a man made diamond but note not much price difference for colourless stones.

woah! nice succinct reply

when you say pure hard labour mined, do you mean utterly terrible conditions and for low pay? are people rounded into doing it or is it that they have no other way to make fifty rappen?

Re: about the diamond biz

Majority will be locals digging by hand or high pressure water washing obviously there will be voluntary and forced labour.

Have a look at the daily mail today. . Quite a good article about this subject.
