Multi-Level Marketing Bull****

So, an acquaintance of mine has been trying to talk to me for the last 4 months or so. She already tried to sell me some multi-level marketing garbage some year or so ago....naturally, I smelled the turkey right away and thankfully refused. This time, she apparently signed up for another ponzi scheme and desperately wanted me to talk to some "important" person in Canada. She sent me a video to watch, where some well known billionaire buffoon endorsed whatever they were selling. I immediately turned of the video, as I could not take it seriously. To get rid of her, I figured to take the call and listen to what the big shot's pitch is all about. He started with the usual pseudo high-powered, fast talking pitch...which did no impress me much, as I am used to real proposals, real tenders and real contracts.....and then he asked me the million dollar question. "How would you feel like making 100k a year?"....at this point I started laughing and told him "sweetheart, this is Switzerland, many people won't even get out of bed for that type of money...at this point, the tone of his voice switched from highly energetic to rather unpleasant and he said something along the lines of "why are you talking to me then?"....which I responded with "Hey, y'all wanted to talk to me, I told you guys from the beginning, that I'm not interested in whatever you're selling".

Regardless of anything, I wonder, why do people keep falling for these bogus, nonsense, predatory ponzi schemes? Isn't it clear from the beginning, that only the people on top earn a decent living? And if you're that good ripping off your friends, family and the random stranger, wouldn't you make a hell of a business person in a decent, regular company? Ugh. LiB Rant Over

Re: Multi-Level Marketing Bull****

My FB feed is filled with this garbage. Everyone selling a slimming shake or nutrition supplements or great decorating products, or makeup, you name it. It seems to be the Americans that take it to a whole new level, although we're seeing more MLM around the world.

In the case of my friends, I chalk it up to the plucky, can-do spirit that is drilled into Americans from birth. If you just work hard enough, you too can be a millionaire. If you sign up a friend, and they sign up a friend, just do the math!! Of course if you want to be successful you need to buy this start-up kit, sell a certain amount each month, and come to our super expensive conference in Vegas that will tell you the secret to getting rich and being your own boss.

I have exactly one friend that has been super successful and quit his day job to do MLM full time. He's got lots of photos with the snazzy company car holding a sign that says "Told you so!" and other photos of him holding those giant lottery-style checks that say he got paid $10,000. The rest? They generally like the products so they tend to keep buying, but eventually they get burned out as they run through their entire friends list trying to find the next sucker.

Re: Multi-Level Marketing Bull****

Why can't someone devise an MLM scheme based on something nice like cupcakes?
I'm always happy to buy a cupcake, but not so keen on time-shares in some crappy Greek resort.

Cupcakes would go off by the time they're passed down the chain.

They should sell actual pyramids.

Avon? My acquaintance' company makes Avon look like a decent company. When I clicked on products, it redirected me to a video which some well-known person apparently endorsed (probably in return for a huge paycheck).

I'm thinking Essex, Footballer's Row (Woodford Green/Chigwell) and the most corrupt planning inspectors money can buy.

Greed. Pure and simple. The promise of easy money makes greedy people ignore the seemingly obvious.

(Ignoring for a second the fact that Ponzi schemes are something entirely different fro this pyramid-type of thing you're talking about.)

The lure is that, knowing that the top dogs are raking it in, if you do well enough yourself you can become one of them. The self-evident fact that the vast majority of members will stay at or near the bottom and be fleeced doesn't appear dishonest (or rather, you can convince yourself of this) as everyone has the same opportunity to claw their way up, right?

There's a well-worn saying that applies here:
You Can't Cheat an Honest Man

Re: Multi-Level Marketing Bull****

In our youth and naivety, we were involved in one of these (the biggest, well-known one ) when we were in the UK. All the spiel, all the promises, all the bloody work to get contacts and sell the stuff and we got virtually nowhere. I began to loathe myself and the business as I was trying to become something that I most definitely was not; our relationship nearly broke up because of it.

Having said all that, it did inspire us to think of the bigger picture and I don't think we'd be in Switzerland now if it wasn't for our involvement.
