Google to rank websites according to truthfulness

Apparently Google are to introduce a new ranking algorithm based on truthfulness.

Read about it here.

http://www.salon.com/2015/03/06/anti...ium=socialflow

As the article rightly points out, this could lead to quacks and conspiracy theorists who often happen to be better at optimizing their search engine rankings than mainstream guys are, nevertheless being demoted in terms of ranking.

Rather than there being a neutral algorithm as there is now, there will be a man-made database of "facts" and the less a website conforms with these facts, the lower its ranking.

So it this just a useful filter against quacks, or is there a danger that valid alternative explanations are going to be silenced.

For example if the database of scientic facts says that a certain company selling [name deleted] fund packages by cold calling people is an impeccable company with ann impeccable track record, the lawyers of that company would no longer need to threaten the EF and have a certain type of threads deleted. Insteda, the whole olf EF would vanish into search-engine oblivion.

What do you think?

Re: Google to rank websites according to truthfulness

So this means that all websites by politicians seeking election will fall down the list into obscurity?

Good luck with that; facts are slippery things and change when people look at them.

Wonder how they will rate religious sites

Re: Google to rank websites according to truthfulness

Search quality team is always trying to invent news ways to protect the sanity of Google results. They can start by establishing truth from ground level fact statements, in their knowledge graph, and work their way up slowly. But hey, we know that, 'when facts change, truth changes as well

This website popped up into my line of sight,

http://www.talkmarkets.com/content/e...edium=referral

So just how wrong are those results? Italy at 4th and Germany at 23rd place!

Meteo.ch (weather) will have a rough time. So will some washing powder manufacturers, whose products 'wash whiter', unless of course, they have paid substantial sums to Google for advertising

Re: Google to rank websites according to truthfulness

It'll end up being those with the most money/best lawyers that end up being "truthful".

Scientology? Fact.

Financial advice? We won't rip you off. Fact.

Consumer complaint? No mate, you're making it up.
