Air show crash in the UK - A27 will be closed for several days

There was an awful accident at the Shoreham Air Show yesterday when a Hawker Huntley Mark 7 crashed on the A27.

http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-34034430

11 dead so far and they're expecting to find more bodies as they continue to clear the wreckage.

The road has been damaged so will need repairing before it can be re-opened so do avoid the area if you're travelling in the UK at present or in the near future.

Thanks Noth. I just wrote it quickly and didn't check back with the article to be sure I'd got it right.

Restrictions have now been placed on vintage jets performing at airshows by the CAA. This is a great shame. Whilst it's a tragady for the victims, accidents like this are extremely rare. Airshows are going to be a lot more boring in future

Ermm, no it's not, many totally innocent people have just been wiped of the face of the earth because of a loop the loop that went wrong! Until the authorities have found out what went wrong it is absolutely the correct response.
I have just moved back to the UK and this is my neck of the woods. The response from the local community is superb in the face of this shocking accident. Local cab firms are taking people to retrieve there cars free of charge for example from the airport. At this stage it is the positive things happening that need to be focused on and the well being off the families affected by the crash, nothing else!

The A27 will remain closed until at least Saturday. The plane wreckage has been removed today with no further bodies found. The death toll remains at 11, not the 20 that had been feared, though that figure could increase.

The additional restrictions on airshows are not surprising. Once the full investigation has completed they may well be reviewed I guess

Actually I think these restrictions may be a bit of a knee jerk reaction. According to everybody's favourite anger porn rag, the Red Arrows would only perform a fly past at this location, never an aerobatic display, saying that the location is totally unsuitable for aerobatics as there's nowhere to ditch a plane safely in the case of an emergency. Basically this airport is an unsuitable location for an airshow where aerobatics are involved.

Certainly ban aerobatics in places where there's a heavily populated area, but at places like Mildenhall in Norfolk (in the middle of bloody nowhere), where I enjoyed many an airshow, there really is no need. That said airshow visitors should be aware of the risks involved. Not to mention the pilots are well aware of the risks themselves.

Highways England don't seem to have a definite date for re-opening of the A27 yet.

http://www.highways.gov.uk/news/breaking-news#2

Though expected date is Sunday 30th August at 9pm.

........

There is talk locally that is should be open on the Saturday afternoon for pedestrians to pay their respects without traffic passing.

Update. Police advised that families of the victims were privately taken to the site yesterday and that the road is likely to open as soon as the investigation and repairs are completed

Yein. On the one side I feel it is being done "because that's what Jo Public expects" and in this day of immediate bashing from the mass twit population they are playing it safe.

AFAIK, if a specific "historical" aircraft type is involved in a major incident, then usually that plane is grounded, as happened with Concorde. I say "historical" as with the amount of aircraft in the skies, every time an incident happened with "current" fleet models, doubtless all aeroplanes would be grounded

As for people knowing the risks involved... I doubt it.

On the other side, I understand that a full investigation does need to take place, but as ever safety comes first, so a near blanket ban is required. I blame the UK's HSE culture...

These are actually temporary restrictions. Whether they remain or are strengthened/relaxed will no doubt depend on the outcome of the enquiry

The A27 is now due to reopen on Bank Holiday Monday but single lane each way, rather than dual carriageway. There will be no access off the A27 at the junction to the airport

The A27 has partially re-opened today. 2 lanes eastbound and 1 lane westbound with a 40 mph speed limit for ongoing investigation work.
