Drugs and Alcohol Abuse in UK Uni locations.....?

Our second child has chosen Edinburgh for his Masters and I've come with him to help install the apartment. It is the second time around, as his sister read at Oxford.

It is also the second time around to spend sleepless nights due to the screaming of drunken young people in the streets below. I'm beginning to regret this decision, even before the Uni term commences.

Honestly, this is not only annoying, but concerning! Are we just unlucky or is this a big problem in the UK?

I thought excessive drinking and drug use were the whole point of going to university.

Susan,

Your child is old enough and smart enough to be doing a Masters... If you haven't taught them where the line is by now then IF they ever learn, it will have to be self taught.

At the beginning, give them shoes, afterwards give them wings.

Re: Drugs and Alcohol Abuse in UK Uni locations.....?

When we took our daughters to their Unis- all the parents were there to move stuff and get them settled- and most had only moved from fairly local towns- so taking a son abroad to take stuff to uni seems quite normal to me Susan- we would do too. Freshers' week is always a bit wild- but yes- UK Unis do seem to go waaay over board. Hopefully he has his head on his shoulders and will get the balance right- but I understand about the sleepless nights ahead- most on this forum may not have been through this. All I can say to those making sarky comments now- without children or with little ones, wait- you just wait- and see what you say, and feel, then. You'll possibly get your comeuppance!

Both mine have survived btw.

Now remind me, Swiss do not pay fees at UK unis, is that right? Must get our grandchildren registered as Swiss soon.

It's all a bit complicated and only really applies to undergraduate degrees. But a Swiss or EU person wanting to study an undergraduate degree in Scotland will not pay any tuition fees but an English person wanting to study at a Scottish university will.

This depends largely on residence rather than nationality but has an element of both.

When not in CH my UK home is bang in the centre of a University City - and there are 3!
Yes, sometimes we have excessive noise into the early hours but to be honest you have installed in them right and wrong, given them sensible guidelines and done your job and now it is up to them to discover the excitement of their University life.
Initially there are the first freshers week of fun where they seem to be on a permanent drinking binge but they soon seem to knuckle down and get on with some work.
I have been through your experience 3 times and can understand your concerns They all got good degrees at the end and all have said that it was the best time of their lives!!

I shouldn't worry about it too much. Yes, students as a general rule drink a lot in the UK. But that's not to say your son will drink heavily, too. And even if he does indulge too heavily, I am sure the hangovers will make sure he learns to drink in moderation. Sometimes kids need to be left to learn from their own mistakes.

It's been quite a number of years since I walked the streets of a UK town late at night. Last September I was in York for the weekend.

It was just like those TV police reality shows. Girls staggering in too high heals, vomiting in the street, lads with pints of lager in both hands, police in Transits with grids on the windows separating the punch ups. Screaming and yelling going on all night...

It's interesting actually. My daughter's at a Uni in Zürich - and this is not a topic. Agree totally with AbFab. Probably a very stupid question, but is this a UK thing?

Yes it's very normal now in town centres, and has been for too long.

The UK has the worst binge drinking culture in the world imo, and I would say it is now pretty much endemic to society and youth culture there.

In comparison CH is very tame and largely untainted by the same issues, and I personally think that's a very good thing, and the kind of environment I want my future kids to grow up in.

Re: Drugs and Alcohol Abuse in UK Uni locations.....?

Funny! I obviously did not express myself very well! ( Wee hours of morning..)My concern was for the screaming locals, which we had also experienced at Oxford. It had nothing to do with our son or the university students.

Since it often kept our daughter awake, I was concerned to experience the same here in Edinburgh. However, it is the FRINGE Festival so I guess it would be the same in Zürich with Street Parade.

Otherwise, BEAUTIFUL city. Caught some great shows, as well.
