Talacker nights??

Revisiting briefly after a long absence from the EF, I am concerned to see not one Talacker night listed in the Events section...what's happened peeps?
The place of many an EF hook-up/relationship...is it no longer?

Re: Talacker nights??

Treverus organised one a couple of weeks ago, but apart from that nobody is interested.

You might have more luck on facebook.

I suspect you'd only be able to get 5 together anyway.

Re: Talacker nights??

I remember back when I worked down the park and the King's Head was where we went each evening after work. It was great: Marston's Pedigree on tap, a decent landlord, a good crowd. We spent most of our time in the courtyard at the back, huddled under umbrellas, cigarettes cupped in our hands, taking forever to finish each pint. Good times.

Then a couple of our mates got barred. I can't even remember the reason now. We started going to the Drum, and it was fun for a while, but after a while we drifted back to the King's Head. The beer was better, and not all of our mates were that bothered about changing pubs in the first place.

Then the brewery renovated the King's Head. They covered the courtyard, turned it into a "conservatory lounge". There was carpet. A wine list appeared over the bar. We started going to the Duke of York instead. But after a while we wandered back to the King's Head yet again. It was, after all, the most popular pub in Lichfield. You could be sure that you'd have someone to talk bollocks with. And, despite the carpet and the wine list, the beer really was very good.

But it was never quite the same. Some of our mates still drank at the Drum, others at the Duke of York. The King's Head was full of students and blokes in suits. Things would never be as good as they had been back in the old days.

I haven't been back to Lichfield in years. I should imagine it's full of gastropubs and fancy cafes these days. I wonder, if I ever did return, whether it would be worth going back to the King's Head. You know, for old time's sake and all.

I'm not sure it would be.

It never is because the moment has passed - like it did the first, second and third time. You can't go back to the past, you can't relive days gone by no matter how many pairs of skinny jeans you buy and how much chrome you have on your Harley.

There is little point in revisiting the location nor catching up with the people we knew when all we are really looking for is ourselves

Re: Talacker nights??

Everyone stays at home, now, and has their own Talisker nights, instead ..... much more fun.

Well, now that the Duke of York -- or is it the Drum? -- appears to have closed up for good, maybe the old band of regulars will be back at the King's Head. And given the lack of investment since the change of management and that makeover, it won't be long before we're back to huddling under umbrellas again, although I doubt there'll be much rain with a cold winter on its way.

The beer's still very good at the King's Head.

Re: Talacker nights??

BHBT: how lovely to see you here again.

People became selfish; they wanted to be entertained and didn't fancy putting any effort into organising / participating in a simple get together themselves. We started getting questions such as "Where are the greeters?" "No special effects?" "Is this it?" and an increasing number of people expecting a meat market - specifically male Indian IT contractors who turned up in their groups expecting drunk chicks. The mood changed.

Such hollow folk did my head in.

Those who did lift a finger to offer something grassrootsy soon became deluded it was worth their while, despite the most excellent friendships - and even marriages and children - midweek drinks have founded.

I've blamed Facebook; since around 2007 the internet became less about 'us' and more about 'me me me'.

As can be seen on EF.

The midweek drinks nights were always about bringing a good attitude, buying your own drinks and no corporate BS. There were some stellar evenings, some quiet evenings, some weird evenings but the stripped back nature was always central.

Entitlement crept in and where there's no soul there's nothing left (see Kantons Schwyz, Zug)

IMO there's such a busy social calendar for a certain strata of expat there's very little need to keep it real; someone else does everything for you (throw money at the problem mentality) and there's an ever decreasing community spirit.

I'm always up for a beer and a chat with anyone clean smelling, but have hung up my organising spurs. Anyone..?

Re: Talacker nights??

We (husband and I) pop into the 'International beer Bar' to see GrumpyGrapefruit from time to time...

We're also now at the stage where our kids are old enough to be left out at night, and for the first time ever in my life we went 'clubbing' with the younger generation from our work colleagues one night...it was funny because most of the people in the club were definitely 40+ and it was playing the same music as they played in the clubs that I didn't visit when I was in my late teens and early 20's....
