Packaging madness

So I needed to order something last week, and it seems that it was only available through one of four or five distributors in Germany.

The cost was only a couple of Euros, but P&P (Versandkosten) was estimated at around 7EU.

So anyway, I didn't have any choice, so ordered it and it arrived a couple of days ago. The fact that the postage cost had increased and was now 10 Eu was annoying, but it seemed that they'd done everything possible to actually make it cost that much.

Anyone else got any good examples of overpacking madness?

Re: Packaging madness

If it was sent via a courier company they may have a 'minimum' package size...something to do with conveyor belts etc and not losing things or having them squished amongst larger items...

Re: Packaging madness

El Reg used to run a competition for this. I seem to recall HP or IBM sending a huge box with a "This page is intentionally blank" manual page replacement (though I may have dreamed it).

Yes, I too recall something like a full pallet of empty boxes to pack it out to size, with just one chip or something in the inner box of many.

BTW, this wasn't even fragile, being just the plastic battery compartment cover for a car remote control.

Re: Packaging madness

If you are really unlucky, you'll get a bill from the courier in the post in the next few days for the administrative costs of bringing the packet through customs.

This was sent to France (from Germany), so thankfully that won't be the case. I did get one customs charge from Fedex on something I bought that was sent from China, annoyingly.

To think they could have sent it by regular mail for under a Euro.

It's not so much the cost, but the waste, that irritates me.

Re: Packaging madness

when i order small items in ebay they usually send them in a padded envelope, but they care more about the customers and selling small stuff and probably deal more with small items, which might not be the case of this shop (i guess only a shop in hong kong can survive selling 1-2 euro items with free expedition).

Re: Packaging madness

Shapeways sent me a 3cm tall 3d printed figurine I made in a box about twice in every dimension from yours (judging by the pen)...

Shipping costed a little more than the actual piece.

You can send me the box to eat.

Probably still taste better than Migros cornflakes.
