If it for sure can't start up (I suppose you have already tried to use CD/USB to boot) the only way is to take the HDD out.
If it is a 24'' iMac, that means it is from 2009 or earlier, which is really easy to open up, you just need a suction cup and some torx screwdrivers. Check ifixit for detailed guides.
Since you only care about getting the data out, you have nothing to lose. I would help you out for fun, but I live too far away.

Do you or a friend of yours have another mac?
If so, you can boot your mac in firewire target mode (pressing T on startup).

Then whatever's let of your hard drive will show up as an external firewire drive on the other mac.

...and this time be sure you are backing up hourly using Time Machine. No need for the crappy Time Capsule - mine failed and was replaced 3 times until it was out of warrantee.

I use WD My Passport 2TB external disc, which runs just fine and was needed when the iMac HD failed in March. It's a late 2012iMac of the current version. The failed HD was replaced FoC by Apple even though 27 months old. All data saved on the external HD...
