I don't know of any winter tyre rated at less than 70 mph. Britain is one place where it's really hard to exceed the national speed limit (due to lack of opportunity, if nothing else). Insurance companies have no business quibbling over the safe maximum speed of a car if that speed is in excess of the legal national speed limit.
Uk construction of use regulations states the tyres speed rating must exceed the maximum possible speed of the car. In CH your supposed to put a sticker on your speedometer if the winter tyres have a lower rating. This was common about 18 years ago in CH when the rule was first introduced. Admittedly speed ratings on winter tyres have increased so it's less of an issue.

No. The minimum speed rating for tyres on most vehicles in the UK is the national speed limit, 70 mph (it's even lower than this for certain classes of vehicles).

See item 5 of the table in Regulation 25 of The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986.

This is pure common sense, since vehicles are prohibited from travell7ng at more than 70 mph in the UK. Drivers who choose to drive abroad on Autobahns in Germany would have to think about the level of safety of their cars, but that's a general requirement of every driver for every trip.

If by "here" you mean Switzerland, well, no, they're not.
You didn't quote the entire sentence. They are required inasmuch as if you have an accident HERE in poor road conditions the insurance company will penalise you.

The German law is that if your car is capable of driving faster than the (fitted) rated tyre speed, you must put a notice on the dashboard, in clear view. You can easily buy cheaper winter tyres rated at 160 Kph, and most cars can exceed that speed. All German tyre dealers have suitable stickers, free of charge, just ask for one.

Actually, I did quote your entire sentence, but never mind.

As for the insurance companies not coughing up if you have an accident in poor conditions while still on summer tyres, I've heard that a lot; but has anyone ever actually experienced this, or seen any written proof of this claim? I assume there's some catch-all out clause for the insurers along the lines of requiring the insured to drive with appropriate preparation and according to the conditions, but it's all rather subjective. Also, many insurance policies have optional clauses (for an extra premium, of course) covering the driver even in cases of gross negligence.

... but the topic was tyre ratings in the UK. However, thanks, useful info for drivers venturing across the border. Do you know if activating the car's speed limiter (my cars have user-controlled limiters specifically for winter tyres) is an acceptable alternative to using the sticker?

Re: Snow tyres in the UK / %?

I've been debating this as I have my spare set from my Swiss car sitting in the garage (without rims) and are the same size as my new car.

If I could find a cheap set of steals I may well put them on. Interesting about insurance. Will call tomorrow and see what they say!

Swiss automobile club confirm the insurance penalty,

Winterreifen-Pflicht: Sind Winterreifen in der Schweiz obligatorisch?
Nein.

Re: Snow tyres in the UK / %?

and the insurance is one thing- if you cause an accident, and severely injur or kill someone- the insurance would be the least of your worries.

Thing is, you can set out on a journey and all is fine- what do you do if the weather turns, and you find yourself in snow and black ice (remembering that abandonning your car at the side of the road, à la English style- would also get you into lots of trouble with police).

Found a link from RAC

A recent study for Manheim Auctions has revealed that the vast majority of motorists in the UK do not plan to buy specialist tyres for this year's winter period.
Despite the predictions of another winter of chaos on the roads and disruptions caused by snow last year, 95.5% of the 3,000 motorists quizzed by One Poll said they do not plan to use winter tyres this year.

So pretty low.
I would guess that 4.5% is very optimistic, even for the highlands. I doubt if most UK motorists even know that they exist. I hadn't heard of them before visiting Switzerland and have not seen any mention of them here. Admittedly, I am in the South of England

I don't agree, especially as you can't go bankrupt in CH, for a first offence your unlikely to prison even for manslaughter (possibly a suspended sentence)

Re: Snow tyres in the UK / %?

Hi Odile

There is a very good underground carpark in Veysonnaz called Les Grangettes which is underneath the Chalet Royal Hotel. It costs 10chf per overnight parking. (5chf for the day). Even at half term it wasn't full.

From the last couple of seasons I can tell you UK cars manage successfully to reach Veysonnaz. They have ordinary tyres but also carry snowchains.

The road up to Veysonnaz is very well cleared so maybe this garage is a good option for your UK cars and perhaps better than Sion for security. We are at 1400m so some 600m below Thyon

Annie

Re: Snow tyres in the UK / %?

Thanks annie- will look into it- very kind. Will you be there in Feb- perhaps meet up at the top of Piste de l'Ours?

We will arrange parking in Sion, just in case conditions are bad- with friends who live there and work in local Police, and will keep an eye on things.

Thanks again.
