One of my wonderful ex students from the UK posted this on her FB today. I am 100% with her:

If tomorrow is Black Friday, does that explain why this could be 'let's all shove each other about and be grumpy and aggressive Thursday?'
Really, haven't the last couple of weeks, months, years etc taught humans anything?
It's not you lot, I know.
I just took a small gift and thank you card to the kind bus driver who picked up my phone from the road, a couple of weeks ago, then delivered it back to me. I hope it brings him a smile.
I wish people would just calm down, all this 'stuff' doesn't really matter.
Love and peace xxLisa
I think this is a sign of the times as much as "Black Friday".

When people do kind things, why do they feel the need to tell the world about it afterwards?

She was not telling the world- just a few friends- to illustrate things which are more important than Black Friday- that's fine with me.

Attention seeking, simple as that.

Look at me, look how nice a person I am.

Well you give me the boak

Re: Black Friday in the UK?

Curry's/PC World have just been slated on BBC Watchdog for showing price reductions, for Black Friday, that have been manipulated to suit, compared to previous prices.

Some goods actually worked out to be more expensive, including a 'substantial discount', than they were earlier in the year.

Now lets all give thanks, that not all American traditions travel well across the water.

AARGH! I'm sick to death of being bombarded by Black Friday promotions - TV/e-mails they never stop. Roll on Saturday I need some peace!

Indeed, same here. I like the Greenpeace message on FB:

DON'T NEED IT

I haven't seen a single advert or promotion for this "Black Friday".

Where are you all seeing this stuff?

All the on-line stores, UK, France, CH, D, have been bombarding on e-mail.

Ah! We have a special folder for stuff like that. None of it goes to the main inbox, so we're never troubled by promotional stuff unless we actually choose to go and read it.

Re: Black Friday in the UK?

I've had several e-mails: several from Costco, from Racing UK, Gamersgate, Ancestry UK, Amazon UK, Book Depository and Direct Ferries - all in the last 24 hours. Sky TV channels have been inundated with Black Friday adverts all week long.

There's a solution to that in my post above.

Well, that's an even easier problem to solve.

Re: Black Friday in the UK?

Nope, it isn't. If I lost Sky I'd have nothing to watch on telly. What would I do without my horse racing? !

Read a book? Go for a walk? Disappear down the Imgur rabbit hole?

We have a telly, but we keep forgetting to watch it. Neither of us can sit still and pay attention for the length of a typical telly programme anyway...

Hey, forgot to thank you- been a long time since I learnt a new (English) well Scottish word- ever since I watched the 'Angel's Share' - had to look it up:

Scottish slang meaning vomit or feelings of excessive nausea.
"Gonnee put that tit away. Yer givin' me the boak" - Burney Nesbitt.

I read a lot too, just had another 4 books delivered last week. Really, apart from my horse racing there isn't much I sit down and watch these days.

And still no peace - one from Amazon UK this morning "Black Friday Refreshed".
