Re: EuroMillions friend

No Austrian ticket has won a large prize (in the millions) in the Euromillions draws since March 2009 -- and no Austrian ticket has ever won a multi-million prize alone (i.e. without having to share the prize money with other winning tickets). Everyone knows that your chances of winning are affected by the last few draws. On recent form, you'd be better off looking for a Portuguese or UK Euromillions friend (although in the latter case, you'd still end up spending around CHF 3 per line).

Thanks for pointing that out. I probably misread OP's initial statement re. price differences etc. Not a player myself, but see plenty of IT frontaliers playing at the kiosks, that's all.

Ciao

Re: EuroMillions friend

To clarify you currently spend 18chf per draw, twice a week for 52 weeks a year? 1872chf.

You wish to spend 12eur (13.50chf) per draw, twice a week for 52 weeks a year? 1404chf - saving 468chf.

The odds of winning more than your weekly stake is about 1in700 (IE every 7 years).

Re: EuroMillions friend

35% withholding tax makes doing the Euromillions in CH a very poor bet. For info UK has no tax to pay, I believe the same is true in Germany.

Yes, very true fatmanfilms. Only Switzerland, Spain and Portugal apply tax. From the Wiki link:

"All prizes, including the jackpot, are tax-free (except in Switzerland, Spain and Portugal since 2013) and are paid as a lump sum."

They're due a big win then.

It's statistics, innit?

I'm off to Venice to buy a ticket.

I'd buy one in Slovenia, if I were you. No Slovenian ticket has ever won any prize in Euromillions. If anyone's due a win, they are!

Clearly the folks in Ljubljana haven't been introduced to the delicate art of bribery and corruption that grease the wheels of western lottery funds.

And let's not even get started on the chances of them ever hosting a soccer World Cup.

Re: EuroMillions friend

Another thought on the tax side, unless you're not a Swiss resident presumably even if you bought your ticket somewhere else and then won the jackpot you'd still have to pay the 35% withholding tax as you're taxed on your worldwide income in Switzerland. Or wouldn't a win in another country qualify as worldwide income?

I read recently (I think it may have been on EF, but I can't find it*) that Basel-Stadt doesn't tax Swiss lottery winnings, but would tax non-Swiss winnings.

However 35% withholding tax is deducted so that won't help the op
