Manchester isn't north. Newcastle, where I'm from, is North. Manchester is practically France as far as I'm concerned.
I'm from near Manchester, it's definitely North

Watching the curling in the last Winter Olympics, the Scottish commentator described Sheffield as "Down South"

Hi,
with my Wife we decide to move our family to London. We have 4 years old son, he will go to school this year. Originally we are from Poland, living here for 3 years
If this is right decision? Well, we don't know but its already made. Reasons:
* language - will take years to learn swiss-german
* we have family there
* there is like 50 times more job offers for me (I am software engineer)

I have question to fellow Londoners from this forum to maybe give me few advices:
* what are nice, family friendly and safe districts where you can have nice 2-3 bed house/flat for 2k-2.2k pounds including all costs? Max 40 minutes to the City
* strategy for finding good school for our son
* anything worth to know

Thanks!
look into Bishops Stortford, or somewhere along the train journey to Cambridge.

As long as you live somewhere easy to get to the train line, many people commute into London and transfer to the Underground on a daily basis. Indeed it's knackering, but that is the life using UK trains and motorways on a daily basis.

Be prepared to experience a way of life akin to a social services program fighting to prevent bankruptcy. The NHS will be another example of this as are the conditions of roads (after becoming pockmarked in the winter) or the trains on a Friday night (with all the wonderful drunks who make noise and a mess).

The Netherlands is a whole lot better if one only wants to get by in English, if you ask me.

Re: Moving to London, need advices

I'm a Brit and know London very well indeed.

In terms of quality of life and raising kids, personally, I would stay here without any question. But if you're struggling to get work here and feel you'll do better in London, fair enough. You have to have an income.

I go back home quite often and can't stand it -- the unreliability of public transport and general noise and hassle. But if you're a 'foreigner' and want the thrill of being in a new place, a huge metropolis with loads of things to do, then that obviously could be a better decision for you.

Accommodation is notoriously expensive and can be a bit sub-standard. You will struggle to find a nice house in a nice area 40 minutes from The City. (Do you mean The City? Or the city? Two different places.)

A lot depends on where you're working. If you have a job lined up in The City then look at places on the train lines out out of King Cross, St Pancras, Euston, Liverpool St etc. to reduce the amount of tube travel.

Does it have to be London? Cities like Bristol, Leeds, Manchester, Cardiff don't have the cachet of seeing London Bridge every day but really, are far more pleasant places to work and live -- in my opinion. They also have large Polish communities. (In London, Ealing and West London generally have a lot of Poles).

Might be worth trying to find a Polish expat online community in the UK, rather like this one here for English speakers. Good luck.

I'm from a place where your tea on a Friday night is likely to be chips, baby's yed n pea wet and baby's are weened from their mummy's teet straight onto a Greggs sausage roll. It's also the venue for the World Pie Eating contest. You can look it up ont t'internet.
