Official Apple WWDC 2008 Thread

Keynote starts at 10am PDT which is 7pm CH time. I've used http://www.macrumorslive.com/ in the past for keynote coverage and it's pretty good. Engadget do one with photos too.

There's quite a few video feeds, though they are heavily subscribed and therefore often fail - prmac.com worked for me before and they are capping theirs at 30,000 viewers. There could well be other live video streams from individual delegates.

I predict the 3G iphone will be available from 15th June and I wonder if Steve is going to pull something else out of the bag too...

I'd be seriously surprised if Apple didn't at least announce the 3G iphone. I think it's very likely that they'll immediately start selling them - considering the fact that the previous model is completely sold out.

Okay, it's that time again. There's a keynote this evening. You've still got a few hours to speculate, then you can discuss the aftermath. Anyways, let us keep it all here in this thread.

Thanks!

New iPod. Mediocre iPhone. Mac Mini discarded, maybe a successor. Boring software stuff.

Of course I'm keeping my expectations low only to get excited by Apple's new tricks...

Why discard the Mac Mini? I think it's got a great niche. Sure, you can hack a AppleTV to do some of what it does, but I don't see it going away.

There's a shortage of Atom processors right now, lately Apple has been able to get Intel's products ahead of other. I think there could be something going on here. An Atom Mac Mini or AppleTV? Perhaps an even smaller Mac Mini?

Definitely not a new iPod. September is the time for that. Probably not a new iMac, as it was just updated at the end of April.

Software? A new version of iLife is possible, and a revamping of .Mac seems likely.

I think the iPhone will rock. They know what was wrong with the first version and I'm pretty darn sure they improved on that. The big disappointment will be that it won't be available until Christmas :-)

Macrumors just reported that Foxxconn (who builds those things) has only produced a couple thousand so far (probably only demo models for the carriers to test) and will increase the production at a later time.

I doubt we'll be seeing anything else (hardware-wise). It's the developer's conference, after all - so it'll mainly be about iPhone OS 2 and Mac OS 10.6.

That would be a big mistake - since the new iMacs have glossy screens they can't be used in businesses anymore (due to ergonomics guidelines). The mac mini is the only alternative for university labs etc. - if they kill that, they can kiss the business sector goodbye.

On the other hand: perhaps they'll actually start making business Macs again since they're pushing into that sector with the new iPhone firmware (DirectPush etc.)

Hi,

I had forgotten it was hype day where one person representing a company with a small market share gets an incrediblely disproportionate amount of column inches of reporting compared to what he annouces and the importance of the company.

I would like him to say that he believes in interoperability and wants to remove all the lockins that Apple has built in to it's product line. Unlikely but it would make them a bit more interesting.

Enjoy the reality distortion field...see how long it lasts this time.

Have fun

Martin

Re: Official Apple WWDC 2008 Thread

The Mac Mini is cool. But in the long run it is just another excuse for the missing headless iMac. The Mac Mini doesn't reduce sales of any other Mac line but I doubt that many Minis are sold now. Of course Apple won't introduce the headless iMac, but maybe they'll replace their low end offer just because they can't do much damage there. Return of the Cube or eMac maybe?

For me these events are just plain fun. I don't give a rat's a** about Apple's company strategy, its followership etc. I like SOME of Apple's products and use some of them for work and at home. I'm always excited about new gadgets and especially cell-phones (however, I'm equally excited about Sony's xperia and about Apple's iPhone, so no fanboy here).

It's like Fasnacht - much ado about nothing but still fun. That's why I dive into the hype every time. I tremendously enjoy watching other people getting hyper excited and then disappointed - I know that sounds sick but it's true :-)

And the point of that post was....what exactly?

This is a thread to discuss WWDC - the mods have created a separate one to keep it away from the rest of the forum, and yet certain members of the anti-Mac brigade still have the urge to come and find it and write pointless comments.

Seriously, what do you get out of it? I don't like Ford Fiestas, but I don't go searching out message boards about them just to post unoriginal and juvenile remarks. Grow up or butt out.

Re: Official Apple WWDC 2008 Thread

I think the post to which you refer, and its content, was perfectly valid. This is not your own little Apple sycophantic sandbox. Many people are interested in what Jobster has to say , but retain a healthy cynicism with what it actually means in reality. This is hardly juvenile but may be unoriginal in the sense that many people are doing it.

I am no Mac convert and yet I have an iphone. My interest is whether I can run anything useful third party on it without the necessity of software hacks.

If you were in the market for a Ford Fiesta category car, then you may seek out discussion fora, and you may post a negative view to see if anyone can adequately respond to your criticism. Then if you have an open mind, you may even be convinced.

Actually, the poster in question and I were discussing that one of the great things about EF was the ability to have frank discussions. I've known him for a number of years. We don't see eye-to-eye on everything, but I have no problems with his comments in this thread.

Nice attempt at justification - however, many people also jump on the anti-Apple bandwagon simply for the sake of doing so, and add nothing of value to the discussion by simply rehashing tired old points which have been discussed to death hundreds of times before. Which is exactly what BaselLife has done here.

You say "This is not your own little Apple sycophantic sandbox" - why do you assume that is what I want? What I would actually like is a discussion regarding WWDC, which is exactly what had been ticking along quite nicely, until BaselLife decided to jump in with his/her pointless post.

I'm well aware that Apple attracts a disproportionate amount of haters, but had hoped that EF contributors would be above this level of playground taunting. Shame that isn't the case, but there you go.

I'm not an Apple hater, I'm interested in the technology. I just won't be donning my sunglasses and cooing with awe when the Jobsmeister bends over on stage and parts his buttocks.

yes it does seem difficult to have an apple discussion on here without it automatically becoming a pro/con apple discussion instead, and i do have vague suspicions that baselife may been bullied at school by jobs or someone who looks like him at least.

oh well. im looking forward to see what he has to say obviously.

There is no need for me or any other poster to justify anything. The tired-old-points that you mention may be so because they are never addressed.

Some might say that the Apple hype has been seen many times before so that the presentation today may simply be more puff.

My interest will be piqued at the mention of something that either makes an iphone more useful, or more details of a larger-screen Newton.

No idea why you are so upset by a mild-naysayer spoiling your runup to the show ? Your vitriol is misplaced and defensive here I think.
