Sure, but property prices and rental costs in a prosperous regional capital will hardly be compatible with those in a declining post-industrial slum, will they?

I do understand about the economics - my reply was to the above ..
which would apply to Leeds indeed.
I don't think so. Have you been to Leeds recently?

Even worse.. Wallis in my case!
But I'd never recommend anyone go to Switzerland to learn German, if that were the sole purpose of the trip.

Thanks all - that is very interesting and will share with him. I used to rent rooms to students and 7 years ago I charged £50 all in ... so probably was out of touch back then too (thanks Richpooch - I knew I could count on you ).

Been in touch with one of my ex lodgers from Leeds and see if she can come up with a much better and cheaper idea for Mario. Otherwise he has the option of half-board and lodgings in Newcastle, for the same money. Cheers.
One of my siblings and SIL, whilst the family was growing up, used to take in students for the odd couple of weeks, maybe twice a year, full board with packed lunch. There was not a profit in it for them, more a social element. The only think my SIL did if they were French, was ration them with the strawberry conserve at breakfast, otherwise they would eat a whole pot each breakfast.

£140 a week sounds good, £20 a night, with I presume cooking facilities & hopefully a washing machine.*

In London 7 years ago if one was paying £700 to £900 basic rent, that would now be £1000 to £1300 if starting a fresh lease. Basic I mean council tax etc additions to pay.

*Hopefully the accommodation is somewhere within reasonable commute for their course. Whilst one might look for cheaper accommodation further away, how much would one spend on travel as well as time lost.

Leicester has been near the bottom of the table for years. John Hood, acting director of the Equality Trust, pointed to higher than average unemployment and rates of low paid jobs, and a higher than average proportion of people claiming benefits, including in-work benefits.

People in Leicester are poorer than people in Leeds, which might help explain the difference in room rental rates.

The fact that you enjoy visiting the vibrant, multicultural paradise doesn't change the fact that it's a declining post-industrial slum.

I wasn't commenting on Leicester as I haven't been there since the early nineties so I'm not qualified to comment on it.
I do however know Leeds pretty well.

Indeedy, and vice versa

it has never been 'post industrial' though, unlike Leeds.

So why did you say Leeds was a 'declining post industrial slum'?

No it isn't- and no I didn't. When is the last time you lived and visited Leicester DB?

Leave you to it. I sent an- email to one of my ex students in Leeds and he said good student accom in centre is about £ 100 max- and he sent me some excellent links and info that will be very useful- and so has one of our ex lodgers. They love both Cities- in different ways- and can discuss with excellent current knowledge of both. useful that.

Facts are facts, Odile: Leicester is a profoundly depressed backwater, whereas Leeds is a prosperous regional capital. That is why providers of student digs in Leeds are able to charge more than providers of student digs in Leicester.

Hope he finds somewhere but the short term aspect is the problem, most of the student accommodation is rented on an annual basis for the academic year.
He may get lucky if someone has dropped out and a place is unexpectedly vacant.

This discussion is pretty pointless. £100? £140? Are these identical rooms in identical areas for identical periods of time? No.

If a room is being offered by a language school I'd expect it to be of a certain minimum standard. I've no idea what "good student accom" means, but it may be a long way from the £140 room.

To get back to the original question, I don't think £20 a day sounds "extortionate" or even excessive for short term accommodation -- but the devil is in the detail. One would need to see the room and the area.
