Re: iPhone application recommendations

Does anyone use Truphone (UK app), The reports are good. Mainly want to use it when I am overseas through the wifi and local carrier.

Any comments welcome.

I have downloaded the APP now and used it a few times to call the UK. Sound quality is excellent through wifi. If you have no wifi and want to make an international call ie call to the UK, you dial the UK number and then it automatically dials a Swiss number and connects the call. So it also worls well without WIFI. My girlfriens has also the APP and aslong as we both have the app open and are connected to WIFI its a free call.
It is different to skype because it can work without a wireless network.

Re: iPhone application recommendations

Ebay app is better than ebay on the pc, just bought some batteries and was up against someone else. Received a message on the iphone like an sms that I had been outbid. The app menu is simplier than the pc version and more effective when bidding against someone else, this is because you have to confirm your bid and you see the clock ticking. Simplified search function, but in the simplistic menu you can see all the items you are bidding on, what you have won and lost. You can also pay using paypal and in a couple of clicks payment is made. Fantastic app, I may use the PC to search for an item in the future, but when a bid is made it can be easily followed and tracked on the iphone which I believe may give you edge against other bidders.

Re: iPhone application recommendations

I use Truphone and it is great. Cheap calls from CH, though it takes a minute to set up. They are launching Truphone Local Anywhere next year, so that you can make cheap calls from OUTSIDE of CH. That will be great! This will make a HUGE difference in European mobile rates and compete with Fring/Skype and others...but I think it is better.

Set up an account and give it a try.

Re: iPhone application recommendations

For photography on the iPhone I recommend the following:

Flickr (if you have a Flickr account)
Photoshop.com (it's free)
CameraBag (a must have)
Lo Mob (great image effects)
Nikon Learn & Explore (free)
Camera Genius (pimp out your camera with added features)

Other apps I can highly recommend:
1Password (currently free)
Skype
Xing
LinkedIn (if you are already LinkedIn)
Tweetdeck (Twitter Client)
Bump (for exchanging info)
SBB Mobile (buy your tickets and get schedules on your phone)
iLingual German (a fun translator app)
Swiss Events (from mySwitzerland.com)
Wemlin (ZVV live timetable app)

I also use Facebook all the time, never had any problems.

Have fun,

Bryon Paul McCartney

Point de Vue (something like chf4.99) - identifies the peaks on all the mountains around you. Also maps them on google maps, tells you the height and draws them according to the light/shade of the time of day. A bit like a mountain specific google earth.

Groceries. This is the best shopping-list application I've seen so far with its categorisation and massive customisable list of available products.

It comes in English and German, so if you switch the app to German it will have most of the products that you would find in a German-language supermarket.

Kindle for iPhone app (you don't need a Kindle to use it). I've posted a bit more about it here:

Re: iPhone application recommendations

Been playing with the ustream Broadcaster app (http://www.ustream.tv/) over the weekend - using it as a "one way" password protected video webcam to allow the grandparents to see my youngster (much easier to take the iphone to her, than, her to the fixed location computer).

Rejoice!! my fellow museli munchers, The Grauniad have just released their much anticipated iPhone app. It costs about CHF 4, but for that you get a fully featured app without any advertising and a useful offline browsing mode.

According to the comments on the article it's not available in Switzerland yet, but I haven't tried it myself.

I have a UK itunes account, but give it a try since the FAQ seems to point to the fact that it can be used Internationally (without any IP checking shenanigans).

I just had a quick look, but there's nothing on the Swiss store yet. Looks like you can use it internationally, you just can't buy it internationally
