interesting times | | | | | haha, good luck trying to get an app store and apps running on every device succesfully! Too little too late. This sounds good in theory but in my eyes it'll probably work very badly and inconsistently.

China Mobile controls it's Android based app store, whilst Vodafone has already launched it's 360 platform.
Regarding device support, this is more about agreeing on development standards that allow developers to access a common platform to deploy applications. This will fly, as the operators are sick & tired of handset manufacturers owning tehir customers by default.
This is one of the reasons why Symbian & Android being open platforms is a huge threat to Apple & it's peers.
Have a Google for Club Nokia, which was an attempt to own the customer by Nokia back in 2001/2002 ... I was involved in a particular part of the project from a network perspective, lots of cash flung at it & then it was blown out of the water by Vodafone.
Similarly, WiFi enable Blackberry was very late to the UK market ... why, Voda had the exclusice & told RIM that they did not want their 3G revenues cannabalised.
Operators will fight tooth & nail against becoming "dumb pipes" & they want to own the customer, the content & the applications .....
game on

But the 1.30 CHF version has 4 stars, so maybe I'll get that one...
Thanks anyway !

When I downloaded it (about 2 months ago) the only difference between the free and paid versions is that the paid one had more choice of colours and designs to customise the little graphic of the battery. I'm the sort of person who never changes the ringtone on the phone, though, so I don't care.
Apart from that, they're exactly the same software, I think. Works fine, never crashes, timings and battery life estimates seem very accurate to me.

Can't remember if this has been covered and too tired to read through again, but just wanted to remind everyone that there's a LeShop app.
I've just placed my first order via the iPod, and it's amazing! It's much better arranged than the online web supermarket, much easier to find things, and much quicker to zap in and out of product pages.
You can do the whole thing offline right up to placing the order, apparently (got wifi here, so don't know), and it fully syncs with what's on the PC - you get all your old shopping lists, etc, and if you start filling a basket on the iPhone/Pod, you can finish on the PC and vice versa.
There's also a Coop one, but only in national languages not English like the LeShop, and it also runs MUCH slower to navigate around the store. I haven't tried an actual order via this one yet, and at the moment I don't feel inclined to - the LeShop one is so good I shall be happy to stick with them for the time being. Or at least until Coop emails me another discount voucher.

Last week my iphone fell into some water and is of course totally useless now.
I only ever used iTunes software to download podcasts, sync the device and load music so I'm not too familiar with its other capabilities.
I synced the iPhone on the night before it went swimming and am hoping that I can restore my new model (which I'll be collecting later) to usability.
Is there a command somewhere within iTunes to restore a (new) iPhone to the same condition as that which it's replacing?
TIA

My most recent installations:
Portfolio lite - an excellent little share portfolio management program. Good interface and a rich set of functions. This is the free version, which will do for many users.
Met Office - UK weather from the official weather forecasters
Space Miner - a cross between Asteroids and an RPG. A good game. Very fun.
Skeptical Science - climate science denier rebuttal resource
Sleep Cycle - purports to analyse your sleep patterns using the iPhone's motion sensors. No idea if this is complete pseudoscientific BS or not, but still fun for the mo'.

It just goes off the first time you move within the 1/2 hour time slot of your set alarm time.
It's quite good, but now I just try to not move in the morning, so that the alarm doesn't go off.
The statistics are quite interesting to begin with, and I do like the alarm sounds, from quiet to louder. I have the urban sound set up and it's much better than a shrill beeping. Unfortunately, Mr C stills relies on the beep, so we get the best of both worlds.

Could someone please enlighten me here?
I read the glowing reports and feedback on the iTunes store for the Qik video application. Lots of users say that it meant that they didn't have to upgrade to a 3Gs to enjoy video.
However, on reading the FAQ on the Qik site, it says (albeit in an old post) that a jailbroken phone is required.
The support page lists three versions of the programme for the iPhone. *** Is Qik available on the iPhone? Where can I download it? Qik is available for the iPhone and can be downloaded directly from the App Store. There are 3 applications available from the App Store.
* Qik VideoCamera: This turns your iPhone into a rich video camera that can do special effects, zoom with 15 frames/second video
* Qik Live: This application lets you to stream live from your iPhone to qik.com and your favorite social networks
* Qik for 3GS: This application is the fastest way to upload videos to your favorite social networks *** However, it is nevertheless available on iTunes and is one of the "Top 20" downloads.
Does Apple normally carry Apps that only work on Jailbroken phones?
I've emailed the Qik site but as yet there has been no reply.

Further to my query above. The Apple iTunes site gives the requirements as:
" Compatible with iPhone. Requires iPhone OS 3.1 or later."
The reviews are also quite positive.
Seems like video is available after all on the 3G

Can any guru's recommend a compass for the 3g that actually works, I've tried 6 now and they vary from shite to total shite, not one has worked. A couple were free and some were paid but the result was the same. 2 even said they were 3g compatible, but after download wouldn't actually sync as they were 3gs only.
The video application discussed above, does it have sound or movie only?
TIA |

Only the 3GS has the compass hardware built-in.

I had a really **** one that basicaly worked like a sundial, I can't remember the exact details, but I think you orientated it towards the sun, then placed your finger on the face and looked where the shadow went. Obviously useless on a cloudy day or in the dark.
