Further to my query above. The Apple iTunes site gives the requirements as:

"Compatible with iPhone. Requires iPhone OS 3.1 or later."

The reviews are also quite positive.

Seems like video is available after all on the 3G
.
..
...
I finally received an answer from the Qik website about video on the iPhone 3g:

"Oh! That was long time ago when Apple still didn't allow live streaming applications in the App Store (Qik started with live streaming app in 2007), so we only had a jailbroken version. Please note that Qik Live (for live streaming) and Qik Video Camera (with effects, zoom, audio boost etc) are different. You are unable to upload videos from Video Camera to qik.com. I know it's confusing - we will see how we can integrate these 2 in the future.

In conclusion, Qik works on all iPhones (regardless of jailbroken or not).

Angry Birds.

But only if you've got nothing to do that day. Nastily addictive stuff.

And PandoraBox, which gives a list of apps on sale/ free that day. Granted most of them are utter tat, but there are the occasional gems.

Comparis Property is pretty addictive. You might be walking through a nice area, wondering how much property costs to buy/rent, so you just fire up the App, let it locate you via GPS and then you're presented with a list of available properties in the immediate vicinity.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet, apologies if so. Whatsapp, its not free but very cheap! A lot of my friends seem to be using it now in the UK and it means free text/picture/audio messaging, also checks your phone book to see who else has it and adds them to your favourites!

Allowing an app access to my contacts . . . something I would be very hesitant about doing.

Re: iPhone application recommendations

Apologies if this is a repeat, but a 16 page thread is way too long to filter, but I really use the NY Times app a lot. Of course, it's another app that is ideal for WiFi. I always read during breakfast and look forward to the iPad for ease of newspaper style reading. One other whilst I'm at it is Trailers Int which actually downloads movie trailers rather than just re-directing you to YouTube links.

BTW - does anyone use the Informant (comprehensive calendar) app?

Convert movie files to watch on your iPod / iPhone - free alternatives.

There was a thread recently (now taken down) from a Chinese spammer advertising dubious software for converting various movie files into formats to play on the iPod / iPhone.

Although that particular one was pretty dodgy, there are some good apps out there for Mac users trying to achieve this kind of thing - and for free. Just in case anyone's interested I thought I'd throw a few ideas out there. In no particular order:

Video Monkey
Evom
MPEG Streamclip

Or even Quicktime Pro plus the free plug-in Perian (Save as self contained movie, then Export the resulting .mov to mp4).

All of the above are free, tried and tested by the Mac community, and proven to work. I've no affiliation to any of them, but I've seen the question come up a few times, so thought others may find them useful. There are tons of others as well if anyone wants to add to the list.

By the way, these are Mac only I'm afraid, but I'm sure there are plenty of Windows alternatives out there if anyone wants to chip in.

N.B. To avoid confusion - these are not iPhone apps, they are for your desktop / notebook Mac. This post has been merged from a standalone thread.

Cream of the crop for converting video files has to be the completely free iSquint or the open source ReduxEncoder. Both will perform conversions to ipod/iphone/apple tv presets and even add the files straight to iTunes after conversion is finished. Lovely.

I was going to mention iSquint but sadly it's been discontinued, along with its big brother VisualHub. I think you can still find copies of them popping up now and again.

Thanks for the reminder about ReduxEncoder though - it's actually based on the code of VH. It's still a bit buggy but improving with every release.

Looking for a social network aggregator (like Friendstream from HTC) for the iPhone - any ideas? Should at least do Twitter + Facebook

Isn't Tweetdeck for Twitter only? I'm looking for something that does both Twitter and Facebook

Re: iPhone application recommendations

For those of you with a German T-Mobile iPhone, Navigon Select is now available. The base package is FREE and contains the maps for D-CH-A. You can then expand it with in-app purchases with more maps, traffic warnings, etc. I haven't bought any of the non-free expansions, but I'm very happy with it so far.
