It'll run over the wifi if you have it turned on, on your phone.

I was wondering about that - do you get a ticket with a barcode on your iPhone itself, that the conductor just scans when you're on the train, or does it work some other way?
Yes you get the same ticket you'd normally get as a PDF from their website.

So wait... the conductor can actually scan the iPhone and validate the ticket?

How fast is the app? Can I buy a ticket in the time it takes the SBB guy to get to my seat from the door of the carriage?

I'll take a wild guess and say it might not be possible to purchase a ticket for a train that's already past its departure time.

I could purchase a full-day pass though, yes? Though I don't know that the iPhone would fit in the punching machines...

A day pass (24 hours) is valid from the moment you buy it, not before.

It is possible but will raise a warning when the ticket is scanned. (Yes I tried ...)

There's a trick that allows you to cheat the system and not pay for the ticket unless it is scanned but I find it rather dishonest so won't give it ;-)

Re: iPhone application recommendations

Put a couple on the wrong thread.

Layar : Funky augmented reality app, taps into various resources to show you places of interest around you with little dots on your camera screen. 3GS

Cyclopedia : Same as above really, but only uses wikipedia as a source, so not quite as good. 3GS

Mobility Finder : Find your nearest mobility car, bit basic at the moment, it only finds the nearest cars and then has a button to phone mobility themselves, but if they keep developing it to make it something like the SBB app, it would be fantastic.

2nd - I have found evernote (esp the image search function) very useful on a number of occasions.

Also the dropbox app for www.getdropbox.com is also very useful for syncing docs between my work PC / home mac and iphone.

Dropbox looks promising, although I don't think our IT lot will allow such an installation. The web version of Evernote is a good workaround for that.

The app I'm waiting for now is the iPhone version of MyLife Organised. If that comes with air-synching, I'll be a very happy chappy.

Re: iPhone application recommendations

Amazon (UK) have just released their app for the iphone. You can search their extensive online store (+ third party sellers), add items to your wish list, buy and most importantly read other customer reviews. I can see this being very useful the next time I'm in Saturn, Interdiscount etc..
