| | | SUV ban in Switzerland?
The SUV and other gas guzzling vehicles may just become an endangered species in Switzerland as a referendum proposing to ban them will soon be launched.
On a personal note, as a cyclist, I won't be shedding any tears to see these four-wheeled mastodons join the extinct list
I know people feel safe in these large cars and that they are very comfortable but they are lethal to pedestrians and cyclist alike. At the same time they may as well ban cars that have excessive speed limits, 140km/h is sufficient - a bit too radical yet

So if I ran you over in a Fiat 500 at 80km/h, you'd be OK?
An SUV would only make the bits fly further.

While I hate SUVs, for many reasons, which I won't go into here, I see the ban would also cover all manner of interesting cars, which would be a shame.

I'm all for banning cyclists - most of whom have a flagrant disregard for road laws and other road users.
And the young greens - LOL. Most of their parents I'm sure are driving around in gas-guzzling off-roaders.

I think that the use of unnecessarily heavy or polluting vehicles (not SUVs per se) by the general public, is something that should be discussed. I wonder if the inititiative (not referendum) will go through, but as in many cases with these things, even lost initiatives and referendas often leave a certain positive aftereffect ...
I disagree with the part of the motion that tries to penalize the existing owners of such vehicles. The new rules should only be applied to new cars or private imports.
Specialists that can prove legitimate necessity of such vehicles should also be allowed to use them.

As an SUV owner i will comment on this thread, i have one of the smallest engine sizes you can get here (2.3 ltr) and my emissions are lower than most of the 2ltr cars on the road. I also wanted a Diesel as they have even Lower emissions, however the Swiss seem to prefer Petrol engines.
When i started looking for an SUV (better in the Deep snow in Winter) all the Car dealers wanted me to by the 3 ltr or more engine size, so took quite a while finding the right car.
Maybe rather than Clubbing all SUV's owners as bad, you should try to change the attitude of the Swiss Garage owner's who import these large engine cars in the first place.

The initiative we are talking about is not an anti-suv motion. It's target are generally heavy, fuel inefficient and overly-polluting cars. Without a doubt this will also include some SUVs but it's not limited to this class of cars.
There are 4x4 cars that would still be allowed after the ban would be in effect.

Let's be honest here. They have enough signatures to get a public vote motion going.
How is the public, car-consuming voter going to vote?
It will fail. Maybe in 10 years time, it might pass but for now, it will fail.
I'd just like to point out that, as an adult, you would prefer to be hit by an SUV than a small compact. Why? Stand at the front of an SUV and imagine what the reaction is as it hits you. You bend at the waist rather than have your legs broken. Of course kids prefer to be run over by 'ikkle cars.

We have 2 cars 2.0 & 1.5 both 4x4 Subarus maybe next time we upgrade will check out the new Diesel version. Where possible I try and use the motorbike. I would use the train but this takes more than twice as long to get to work, but business trips to Geneve are by train.
