Savings

Hi,
Posted a threat not too ago that upset a few since it was about something already discussed, salaries. As very valid point made by one of those who replied was that given there are multiple factors involved in determining this, the validitiy of asking people how much they earn is well limited.

So here is a different angle, A poll asking how much will you save in 2008, if indeed you have done so. Assuming we are all living within our means then it is a reasonably easy question to answer. Perhaps you have spent a sizable sum on something, take that into account within reason- ie. It will have a re-sale value, like a car, not interested in your disposible income, interested in how much you have managed to bank living and working in Switzerland.

Hi Mark,

It's missing one option though. Could you add the following response:

"None of your business you nosey parker"

Cheers

Re: Savings

Why is the option "Saved nothing, less savings this year then last" and not "Nothing, just as every year"?

Re: Savings

Well, I tried to. But if I look at the current value of my UBS stocks I would need a "negative savings for this year" option. Almost.

Its amazing how much money you can save if you just watch what you are spending money on and set budgets. From January to July I was living paycheck to paycheck here and had virtually not a dime to my name. I was still asking my parents in the US to help me make my student loan payments and cover my credit card payments. I finally had enough in July and decided to dig myself out. I moved out of my 1600 franc a month apartment and into a shared flat. (where coincidentally I actually have more space), cut out eating out, and overall dumb purchases.....

Since August I have managed to:

-pay off my entire $3000 credit card debt
-pay off $2000 of my student loans
-have managed to stash almost $10000 into savings and CD's in the US
-saved 2400 francs for a vacation that I am taking in 2 weeks.

(if the swiss franc didnt start to lose ground against the dollar beginning in August, I could have done even better)

Probably not easy for a family to pull off, but every little bit helps
so you're saying i should stop lighting my cigars with 100 Franc notes?

Re: Savings

Just curious, but what the **** has it got to do with you? Would you mind posting a copy of your bank balance and pay slips so we can all have a gander at the ins and out of your back-side and then, maybe, I'll let you know about mine. Or are you my father?

Nobody is forcing you to answer. Obviously some people feel comfortable talking about how much money they were able to save this year.
Mine *is* bigger than yours.

Can you fix the spelling errors as well ? My brain hurts every time someone mixes up 'than' and 'then'.

(Aside: anyone have any theories on why this is error seems to be largely isolated to Americans ? Is it a pronunciation thing ?)

There's a difference between an editing goof and a grammatical error. Besides, it's mandatory that any criticism of spelling on the internet must be accompanied by at least one error from the critic.

(I am genuinely curious. I've noticed that some spelling/grammar atrocities seem to be prevalent throughout the (native-)English-speaking world - eg: you're/your - but others seem restricted to certain areas or cultures - eg: then/than.)

Re: Savings

I am sorry, I appear to have upset a few more people with this post, which I genuinely thought was less offensive then the one asking for people's salarie ranges.

Why do I ask the question, cause none of us is getting any younger, and we are all being told to save money for our old age, and I would like to get a feel for the sort of sums individuals living in Switzerland manage to save?

And yes it is linked to your salary, the less you get paid in real terms the less you can afford to save, so there should be a link between this poll and the salary one in theory.

Perhaps it is that your savings is a personal thing and your salary is something the majority of people feel that have little or no control over, once they are roped into a job/industry/area etc; I honestly dont know.

But hey this is a discussion forum; and this is a subject that lends itself to such a forum since the majority of individuals who post here are relatively anonymous.

This post has all the relevance of the salaries one. Can a single guy save as much as a couple who are both woking? Salary levels, expenditure, and personal circumstance drive ones ability to save.

Why are you so hung up about what people earn or save?
