Try reading the RIVERS OF LONDON books by Ben Aaronovitch.

Great entertainment! The fourth book is out at the end of July.

(A good Cigar, a nice glass of Single Malt, the Kindle in hand. Relaxing on the terrace on a warm evening... smirking at the world)

Have a good summer All

GREG
I'll second that - they are a really fun read

Also thought that the 100 year old Man was great.

Currently for me is the final book in Kerstin Gier's Edelstein Trilogie - Smaragdgrün. The books are definitely not high literature, but are fun novels about time travel, aimed at the teenage girl market (think Twilight, but taking itself less seriously). A fun way to improve my German

I'm also working my way through the What to Expect when you're Expecting book, but more on a dip in and dip out basis - I have the UK version, which is not too Americanised - am reading the weekly/monthly updates as I get to my milestones (35 weeks today - ) and looking up some other things as I need them.

I'm reading a day in the life of ivan denisovitch by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and I really hate the translation, its so clunky it makes me dislike reading it.

Finished Metro 2033 and was shocked to find out that the sequel, Metro 2034 isn't translated to English yet!

Re: What are you currently reading?

I tore through the first three Game of Thrones books April-June (averaged a month for each), needed a break from that world for a bit so I read World War Z in between - but between work and generally losing interest in it after the first half, it took me way too long to read; something like four weeks. Finally finished that and start GOT #4 (Feast for Crows) last night - 80 pages in so far and I'm really happy to be back with these characters again.

Re: What are you currently reading?

Earlier this year I've read:

Cleopatra biography (very interesting, didn't know much about her or Caeser, etc)

Unbroken (simply incredible, usually I'm not a fan of these "inspirational" type biographies but wow this story is stunning)

"Looking for Alaska" by John Greene. This guy is all the rage with late teen-twenty something girls but I figured I'll give him a shot. Wow, complete and utter melodramatic SHITE! Not recommended.

Tweak by Nic Sheff. Autobiography from a former meth/heroin addict. This book is also complete trash. The first half reading is a bit entertaining but after that you start realizing what a twat the author is, and then you have to suffer through the next 200 pages and it's almost unbearable. Long story short, rich kid in Hollywood's parent's get divorced, dad takes him to "parties" as a child and thus he "never had a childhood" and simply had to do drugs and prostitute himself on the streets in between dating celebrity girlfriends, blah blah blah. Consequently the author relapsed on his nationwide book tour, and then went on to write another biography about THAT relapse. You simply can't make this stuff up. I don't think I've ever been so irritated by a person.

Re: What are you currently reading?

Just about to finish Eleven Minutes by Paolo Coelho

I read it 10 years ago without really understanding much.
But that was before I experienced real loneliness or love.

Re: What are you currently reading?

Currently reading Monstrous Regiment from Terry Pratchett. For the second or third time I think. Have read all books from Pratchett several times. In between where the Hunger games (all 3 in a week) and the shadow of the wind.

Re: What are you currently reading?

Today, I read Pragmatics and Relevance Theory Perspective in Poetic Effect, by Pilkington. It's not the easiest read, but it is interesting. Especially the chapters on literariness, conventions and maxims in literary reading.

Re: What are you currently reading?

I've started John Scalzi's Fuzzy Nation the other day. It's a very funny book about, well, a guy who found a claim of rare rocks and now the company wants to screw him out of it. Add some jabs at general Exploration and Exploitation companies and how they're treating Africa, some snark about modern management and a dog who's an expert on explosives and you have yourself a great read.

I just read "Dark Places" by the same author...great book so I am looking forward to Gone Girl.
I finished The Shinning, decided to watch the movie and really what a waste of 2 hours...

Now I am reading "the woodcutter" by Reginald Hill, one of the best books I've read.

Re: What are you currently reading?

Another Crime Novel of Michael Theurillat. The first one was Sechseläuten and the second now was Rütlischwur . In the centre of the novels is crime police commander Eschenbach (fiction figure). Both published by Ullstein. No idea whether ever translated into any other language

But clearly superb

I'm reading "For all the tea in China, How England Stole the World's Favorite Drink and Changed History".

Quite fascinating actually. I'm sure some of you would be interested. I'll pass it on when I'm done.
