Help Apple Disciples!!!!!

Hi Mac users.

Tonight I seem to have lost entire itunes library.

Mac started hanging when I tried to import photo. After hell of a long time I forced a reboot. When mac came back on the icons in the bar at the bottom have reverted to huge. New downloads have disapeared from the bar at the bottom and worst of all my itune library is empty. nada, Zilch.

Followed the mac forums instructions to no avail.

How can I set the mac to how it was tis morning. Man thanks aand copious amounts of alcohol available to the saviour.

M.

Re: Help Apple Disciples!!!!!

Are you doing time machine backups?

If so enter time machine and move to the point in time you want to restore.

Select spotlight search.
Type in "itunes music folder"
Double click "iTunes Music"
What do you see?
(You should see your music folders)

Re: Help Apple Disciples!!!!!

What version of mac os are you running? i,e leopard, tiger or earlier

I don't know the answer myself but this might help the people that can.

Also check to see if you still have the main music files on your hardrive these should be viewable in finder in the music folder... if you have the main files you have just lost or corrupted you library file and will need to relocate this or create a new one.

Re: Help Apple Disciples!!!!!

Hmmm this might indicate that you're having disk issues. I'd recommend launching the Disk Utility, select your main volume (usually called "Macintosh HD") and in that order :

- Verify Disk
- Verify Disk Permissions
- Repair Disk Permissions

When selecting the main disk (the entry above Macintosh HD) you should check that the S.M.A.R.T Status is set to Verified.

I'd be very careful in the next days, make sure your backups are up to date. You can detect early disk errors by launching the Console utility and searching for "disk", if you see entries about IO errors, read error or something like this you know your disk is dying. Another typical symptom is your mac sometimes becoming very slow.

Re: Help Apple Disciples!!!!!

I have a question on behalf of a Swiss colleague: she's suddenly lost a lot of photos on her main HDD running OSX Tiger 10.4.11.

She therefore doesn't have access to Time Machine and is now interested in Time Capsule.

Is there any software restore recommendations amongst the community?

Apart from the standard circa 140 CHF license fee, are there cheaper Leopard upgrade alternatives from Tiger?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Help Apple Disciples!!!!!

I wonder how she lost only photos and nothing else (assuming she didn't lose anything else)? That suggests possible accidental deletion of some sort - has she checked the Trash? If she was storing them using iPhoto, check she hasn't moved or tinkered with the iPhoto library database located in /Users/HerName/Pictures, that's a surefire recipe for trouble.

For backups I use an app called SuperDuper, never had a problem with it. Regarding Leopard, there may be educational discounts, have a look at the Apple website. I don't think there's any kind of cheaper "Leopard-Lite" package though.

Disk Warrior 4. If you are near Zurich main station every now and then and trust her enough with a CD she can borrow mine as it costs about 150 Fr. but usually is collecting dust (fortunately).

Hi Nathu

I just read that you have a CD with Disk Warrior 4. Or at least you used to have one... Any chance you held on to that and would lend it to me?

Regards

Eva
