Where's the boat gone? Ship hijacked in the Baltic Sea

A Maltese flagged ship carrying timber valued at US$1.5 million was hijacked on July 24th in the Baltic Sea. It was last seen off the north coast of France on July 30th after sailing through the English Channel. Now the Russian Navy has been deployed to track it down.

Any thoughts or speculations on what has happened, where it might be going, or what may have been on it?

Theories on Ship Disappearance

Interesting article on Yahoo this evening...

Ship disappears after sail through English Channel
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090813/...aXBkaXNhcHBlYQ--
LONDON – First the ship reported it had been attacked in waters off Sweden. Then it sailed with no apparent problems through one of the world's busiest shipping lanes. And then it disappeared. The Arctic Sea, a Maltese-flagged cargo ship, was supposed to make port in Algeria with its cargo of timber on Aug. 4. More than a week later, there's no sign of the ship or its Russian crew.

What's your theory on what happened to it?

And how do we prevent this from happening in the future?

I myself think the ship was taken over by pirates near Sweden, and the pirates steered it through the Channel to get out of the North Sea while radioing an "all clear" so they wouldn't be cornered by the British or Russian navies. Once they got clear of the Channel they made a beeline somewhere.

Or was it a UFO that got them?

Re: Theories on Ship Disappearance

The theory put up by Lloyds this morning on BBC Radio 4 is that it was some form of internal dispute between ships owners/cargo owners and crew, possibly for non-payment. They do not consider it to be piracy.

Apparently, this is not an uncommon situation. There are one or two similar situations around the world every week. It is uncommon in UK waters.

Re: Theories on Ship Disappearance

Actually, Lloyd spokesman said on BBC news that this is still a piracy. There are commercial disputes all over the place, not only in shipping; one cannot just grab a gun and threaten/imprison people.

I'm just curious why the russian navy is looking for the boat... is it common just because the crew consists of russian nationals?

This is a great start to another conspiracy theory, now where do I get my salted popcorn....?

I didn't catch that bit. Still half asleep I guess . Was there any evidence of force having been used, or has it just gone missing?

The main point, as I understood it, was that they didn't think that it had been taken by a third party, such as the recent Somalian piracy incidents.

According to the BBC Article, The ship was boarded in the Baltic Sea by armed men claiming to be Drug Enforcement Officials, but it was thought that they left the ship about 12 hours later... I guess some were still on board.

Hijacked Arctic Sea feared to be carrying secret cargo of drugs

The reason for the Russian interest is that it's a Russian owned ship.

According to the article in the Telegraph which I posted -
Quote:
Dmitry Medvedev, Russia's president, ordered the hunt for the Russian owned and manned Arctic Sea, which is now suspected to have headed for West Africa's Atlantic coast.

But that still doesn't explain why those white trail things come out the back of the UFO's they have flying along the same routes as commercial aircraft. Nor does it explain why when it gets cloudy the weather changes, and sometimes, water even falls from thin air!

The pirates will probably use the timber to make a large raft and escape to a tropical island where they will build timber houses.

Perfectly possible and very common. Many ships are owned by entities in one country, registered in another (flagged, out flagged or flag of convenience) and classified in yet another country.
If the vessel was taken over by the officers and crew then technically it would be barratry, if it's the crew and not the officers then it's mutiny and if it's outside agents it could be piracy or hijacking. An interesting case and I wonder if we'll ever find out exactly what was on board....
