One of my good friends is a midwife and she had a patient a few years back who had given birth a few days before and was still incredibly exhausted and drained from the whole experience. My friend was concerned about her. She didn't seem to be getting her strength back and the baby seemed unsettled, so she decided to try to get to the bottom of what was going on with this woman.

After much questioning, it came to light that the woman was breastfeeding more than just her newborn. She was still breastfeeding her two year old, comfort feeding her six year old and expressing enough milk for her husband to have on his cereal every morning!

Now that is one committed Mama.

damn. i had this great idea of starting a cafe in nyc called "cafe con leche" when my son was an infant... i knew there would be a market!

on the more serious side it was normal to "help out" feeding neighbor's infant, who was the same age as my son- it wasn't seen at all as strange and in fact was really useful for new mothers who were not having the easiest of times learning to nurse.
