However it has to be said that LCD still trumps OLED for outdoor viewing and picture quality, the latter suffering from a number of screen artifacts.

| | | | Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ | Quote: | | | | | I actually don't - I think it's too small. Most other manufacturers now put 3.7", 4" and 4.3" displays on their flagship phones. Apple has decided to stick with the 3.5" form-factor, which might have been great 3 years ago but is now, as the usage patterns for these phones are changing, sub-par. Yanking up the resolution will only make things harder to read. I am secretly hoping they'll be releasing not one but two new models - one with the 3.5" screen and one with a bigger one - but I guess that's not going to happen as they don't want a large-screen iPhone eat its way into iPad sales.

Gizmodo actually say the screen is slightly SMALLER than the 3GS screen.

Anyway, OLED is not necessarily an improvement when it comes to battery life. OLED#Power_consumption | Quote: | | | | While an OLED will consume around 40% of the power of an LCD displaying an image which is primarily black, for the majority of images, it will consume 60–80% of the power of an LCD - however it can use over three times as much power to display an image with a white background [50] such as a document or website. This can lead to disappointing real-world battery life in mobile devices. | | | | | And Apple do like their bright backgrounds.

I don't like the fact that my iphone stopped working and got very hot...
A quick search on google reveals some interesting stories...

I can only tell you what I've read, from vaguely reliable sources.

Sorry what I meant to dispute was your recollection of Gizmodo's claims, but checking their post again it seems you are indeed correct.

Rather than starting a new thread, i guess I can post my question here. With a phone that's about to go "kaputt" and a 20 Gig Ipod out of memory, I was thinking of buying an Iphone 3G, even though everybody keeps advising me to wait for the next generation. Does this make any sense at all for the moment? I will happily wait a couple of months (August-September?) for the new model, but would like to have something in my hands before x-mas though. I assume there will also be another waiting period between release in the US and the rest of the world?

It's a good thing you asked us. It is definitely advisable to wait.
The new iPhone will be announced in a week and should go on sale worldwide immediately.

Presumably any 3gs ( new or used) will be less expensive after the 4g is released. That would be the main reason to wait I would say.

Thanks for the replies, I'll keep an eye on the latest Apple news (are they still having one of their infamous Events any time soon or is the hype of releasing new things that way sort of over?). Either way, I will probably go for the 4G once it's available.

I have a chance to pick up a Swisscom-SIM-locked brand new iPhone 3GS ... I have 12 months left on my contract with Swisscom ... this would be a gadget to play with to see whether I like it better than my BlackBerry ... how much should I offer for it ... what's a fair price with the next gen iPhone coming out soon?

Is it just me or have Orange actually increased their prices for the iPhone?
A year ago, I upgraded to a 32gb 3GS with a 12 month extension on the cheapest abo at the time (Optima 30) for CHF 449.- (the most expensive upgrade there was).
Now the same upgrade comes to CHF 599.-.
A not entirely convincing theory would be that not carrying the entry-level 3G allow them to charge more for the 3GS, as it does not have to be priced relative to it.
At any rate, this could be bad news for people looking to upgrade to the 4G/HD next week.

None of the features are new. They simply (finally?) listened to the consumers' wishes (except for the video-chat thing that nobody's going to use - that's been around ever since the first 3G handsets hit the market a couple of years ago). Also - video calling is WiFi only for now.
I really fail to see the appeal of the device - the screen has a great resolution but is too small. HD video? A handful of people will probably be able to use it. I doubt many people will buy video cutting software for Windows to actually be able use that stuff.
Oh, and Switzerland isn't in the first batch for getting the device - it's USA, Germany, Japan, France & UK only for now

That hasn't exactly impacted sales.

You don't get iPhone owners over on the Android thread moaning about new Android phones. Why does the iPhone attract such negativity?
