I updated last night and it went well.
Some nice changes ( unified inbox and folders) but the biggest so far for me is ibooks. I got rid of stanza and with Calibre I can convert pdfs into epub format for easier reading with iBooks. The screen is a bit small to churn through lots of pages so serious reading would require an ipad I reckon.

Thanks so much for the heads-up on this - thought it would be much later in the year. I'm LOVING folders!

I'm going to wait and see how many of your iPhones get bricked before I update.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it |

Installed without issue on my 3gs
Works well, but some apps need updating as they crash or don't work:
20min
Baz.ch
skype
and the facebook one gets confused with requests/newmails/other things that add a red 1 (or number) to the icon.

P | | | | | Runkeeper doesn't work right, either.
I found quite a few quirks, unfortunately:
- Multitasking doesn't work that well. Considering the fact that Apple have been boasting about how they're the only ones to get it right, it's a bit of a joke when an app like Ambience can take down the whole OS. Wouldn't have happened on Android, although apparently they didn't get it right. Right?
- The iPod app, especially the video part of it, is seriously screwed up. Browsing the videos and podcasts I have on there is so painfully slow now that it reminds me of the old Windows mobile days.

When will they let me add the current playing song to a playlist?
At least we can do more than just using the "On the go" one.

Hmm, I think I'll definitely wait a bit:- http://www.reghardware.com/2010/06/2...pgrade_issues/
Edit: if you have a 3GS it looks like you're good to go - unfortunately I only have a 3G

Mine's a 3GS (edit: iPod Touch). Haven't found any problems yet - I've put all my apps into lovely little folders, opened up a random selection of apps which have all worked well, and got the multi-tasking going to flick between Stanza, Safari and Mail, my 3 'big hitters' on the device.

Since I had a recent backup anyway, I said the hell with it and skipped the backup, then everything went fine, if a bit slow (3G, by the way).
I love the responsiveness of the home screen now. That said, some of the apps feel a bit more sluggish. And be sure to upgrade all your apps after upgrading the OS - WhatsApp, for example, refused to function until I deleted and downloaded it again (though I suspect now that simply updating the app would have been sufficient). | Quote: | | | | | Runkeeper doesn't work right, either.

Peter | | | | | Just out of curiosity (genuine curiosity, not smartassyness) what do you like about the iPhone? Admittedly I haven't read all your posts, but you spend an awful lot of time posting on the flaws of the iPhone - yet surely there must be something you like about it? Or is it just that you bought it and can't afford an Android phone yet, so you keep using it despite the dislike?

- it's the de-facto standard -> it's the prime platform for content and apps and most content providers consider the iPhone first with Android following months later (or not at all -> 20min, BaZ, Tagesanzeiger etc.)
- it's a consistent monoculture. That's both good and bad. It's bad because it offers little or no choice to the customer in terms of devices. It's good because it allows the manufacturers of 3rd party add-ons a high degree of security in their development strategies, thus leading to a great number of accessories from screen protectors all the way down to stereos with iPhone adapters and active GPS-enhancers like the TomTom car kit. In practical terms, this means: I own a home theater system with an iPhone connector, the TomTom car kit and a running-case for the iPhone - that's why I still have it. My primary phone's a Nexus One.
what I don't like is the device itself. I think it's being hyped into a god-like status. It's far from that, however. The first iPhone was revolutionary. The second one was evolutionary, but still ahead of the pack. With the third one, Apple became complacent and the competitors didn't wait. With the 4th iteration the jury's still out. If the screen's really that great, it might catapult the device ahead of the pack again.
Apart from that: do you expect me to clap my hands for iOS 4 if all I experienced since the installation was the loss of GMail Exchange push functionality, a slow down of the iPod app all the way to jerky sluggishness and the fact that Ambience forced me to reboot the phone twice last night after having moved it to the background?

FYI.

As I'm still undecided whether to get the iPhone 4 (will depend on whether it works with my TomTom car kit and the rest of my accessories), I'll bridge the gap with a Sunrise prepaid card - will later be able to convert the number into a mobile contract.
