| | | Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ | Quote: | | | | | It's the loudness of the data when you download mp3's. Classical music mp3's typically have lower volume than death metal mp3's.
Just ****ting ya, actually it's the AMOUNT of data you download/upload, typically measured in periods of 1 month. | | | | | What kind of data volume are we talking about, if we surf for say 1hr per day?
Estimates please.
I am unfamiliar with handheld devices surfing the net.
Very interested to buy a new iPhone 3G, with GPS.
What would be an ideal data volume package from say Swisscom?

(New question)
I have a contract with Swisscom through my place of work - my work mobile is my main mobile (I only have the one). Two questions...
1) anyone know if i'm allowed to march into a store once they get iphones in stock and just pay to upgrade? Perhaps i'm not allowed because it is a corporate/business acct?
2) anyone know how to figure out which business plan i'm on and when it expires (ie. how eligible i am for an upgrade) ? I don't get a bill...
cheers.

So now that both the plans are otu can someone please be really helpful and recommend me a plan from either swisscom or orange? What I will probably do most is: Texting, Surfing the web and downloading things from the application store. Can anyone recommend a plan from either swisscom or orange for me? I was thinking about getting the iPhone Optima 100 from Orange or the NATEL Liberty Grande from Swisscom. Also I am under 27 years of age so would I go best with the iPhone Optima 100?

I only hope the 3G Orange network is good enough. Swisscom used to be really really bad, they've just upgraded before Euro 2008, but now it's really really fast (where I work it's faster than our WiFi, but that's because the WiFi is ****ty :-).
Still, I will go with Orange. Price is smaller and they offer the 12 month contract. With Swisscom I would have had to take the most expensive plan, with Orange I can go with the cheapest (because the amount of data is the same).

Does anybody know if any of Orange or Swisscom plans allow the access to external Exchange servers with the "private" (non-business) plans?
I know both the companies offer hosted Exchange for the business customers, but I just want to access my company's Exchange server.

At least, not yet. Maybe in France, where apparently the law mandates the mobile operators to sell unlocked phones.

oh my god why dont i live in france?! Hahaha no i think ill just get the orange contract. But in the end when the contract is over do i get to keep the iphone? If I do I'll unlock it (in 1-2 years time a jailbreak sort of thing is bound to be able to be done on an iphone 3G) and just use it as a normal phone.

Your best chance will be Dataquest - they're saying that they'll be selling the iPhone without contracts as well.

It really depends on how long you talk on the phone. Swisscom's per hour tariffs can be a real cost safer if you talk a lot on the phone.
Apart from that: if you plan on downloading things from the web just make sure you get a plan with 1gb of included data traffic.

peter | | | | | Yeah, that I know
I just hope they don't lock access to other Exchange servers for non-business plans.

(like your company's server for which there's a contract with Swisscom and which you'd like to use with a private plan as well?)

peter | | | | | Exactly. I have a work phone with a Swisscom contract (I suppose it is a business plan) and with which I access the Exchange server. However, since I don't talk too much on it (read: almost not at all), I would rather give it up and use my iPhone (which would be my own with a private plan) to access our Exchange server. In this way I don't have to carry 2 devices.
I am pretty sure my company will not buy iPhones for us, unfortunately.

Are you allowed to forward your company e-mail to another address? mail2web's Personal Exchange service (the paid version) allows you to define different "default from" addresses so your co-workers wouldn't see that you're using a different account. I'm doing that at work - but then we don't use Exchange.

The new iPhone 3G will have native support for Exchange in its own mail client (based on Active Sync). But AFAIK, the operators can block this feature and unlock it only for business plans.
So the question is: will Orange and Swisscom do this or not? |

however, we are talking Swiss MNO's so don't hold your breath. Best bet would be to pop into an Orange store / Swisscom shop, then again, my last purchase of a Blackberry was tortuous.
