Re: Travelling alone to london in xmass with a 6 yr old son

This looks like fun- What's on is the alternate London guide

Quote:
Christmas is just around the corner again and from mid-November to early January a part of Hyde Park close to Hyde Park Corner is turned into a Winter Wonderland for the benefit of London's younger visitors.
Get fully into the swing for Christmas with a visit to Santa and his assistants at his grotto at the bandstand in Hyde Park to request the presents you would like to receive.

Once again the event features London’s largest Ice Rink, and the iconic 50m Observation Wheel, with 40 heated pods offering truly spectacular views across the city. Winter Wonderland also boasts the most atmospheric German Xmas Market in the country, with over 60 individual Tyrolean-style chalets selling unique & quirky gifts, overlooked by central London’s only Rollercoaster.

A walk along the South Bank, starting at Tower Bridge, and ending at Westminster, or vice-versa, is free, and interesting for both of you. It is full of street theatre, buskers, tourists, life. You could take a day to do it, stopping for lunch at one of the riverside cafés. It is right by the river, so all the river life is to be seen too. The distance is probably about four miles, but you could do just a part of it, as there are tube stations along the way. Its not to be missed. Think there is a Christmas market too. Check out www.southbanklondon.com

Covent Garden has shops and street theatre too.

Nah, it's just that it's been Safeway for 7 years almost. The Morrisons virus spread south and consumed them all.

Re: Travelling alone to london in xmass with a 6 yr old son

you will have aqn amazing time! I'm from london, its great but v cold... go to The Natural History museum first, its amazing, think you can go ice skating there too around that time. Take your son to Harrods to see Santa. I think its free and you get a great gift, plus its a beautiful building and very fancy. Hamleys in regent street is the mega toy store, But this will be hell around Christmas time. Go to a musical to if you can. Im sure he would love 'Billy Elliot' or the 'Lion King.' you can get all sorts of cheap deals on lastminute.com so its not too pricey.
Check out the markets too! Portobello in Notting Hill and Borough market is really cool and unusual.
Make sure that you buy a travelcard and an oyster card because travel is very expensive.
I know its very cold but try and make some of the parks in London too, Kensington Gardens and Hampstead Heath are stunning all year round and you child will probably find lots of kids to play with.
Hope that helps!

If your looking for cheap eats check out moneysavingexpert.com and look at the restaurants page. I always go to Pizza Express, Zizzi, Cafe Rouge and Gormet Burger Kitchen for half the price. These restaurants are all over London and all you have to do is print off a voucher!

Hi all,

I need your help here. I am a mother for a 6 yrs old boy, and we are travelling to london alone thrd wk in December.

I haven't been there before, and have no clue what to visit and what to skip. I just want him to have fun, see interesting things, and don't mind shopping for a day

I want to have your recommendations on the best places to visit within a week. We are staying in Trafalgar(spelling?) . Is there any reservations to do prior to being there (Museums, public transportation etc.? as I know it will be a high season)

Hope to hear from you soon.
thanks
The theatre is a must - especially a kids show like the Lion King, Oliver, Mary Poppins etc. Check out www.lastminute.com for cheap tickets (often including lunch or dinner too)!

Re: Travelling alone to london for xmas with a 6 year old son

Thank you very much for your information, I am really gratefull, I managed to book tickets for the Aladin show. and wrote down the places you recommended into two categories, the indoors and the outdoors.

The only thing now am worried about is the weather. They suspended all the flights today, We are flying tomorrow and I don't know the situation yet with the London city airport , Hope we have luck then

Re: Travelling alone to london for xmas with a 6 year old son

Thought i will add to this existing thread about taking two kids to London during this summer...
we are going to London with two kids(4yrs and 2yrs) for a week..So can someone suggest some parks for the kids to play near city and is there any beaches nearby?
I don't think my kids will love the museums as it will be boring for them..anyway we are planning for the wax museum..
Any recommendations for the Sight seeing buses??Do we have to book the tickets in advance or just go and buy..
Any tips for must see attractions are also welcome...

Regards

There is the Urban beach but I think it is closed now although it may be a handy link for others travelling next year:

Other than that I don't think you'll find anything closer than a few hours away from London.

The Lady Diana Memorial park in Kensington Park is a nice way for your kids to let off steam for an hour or two.

Hello!
Personally I think the Wax Museum can be quite boring for kids your age.....plus, there are always huge queues outside, and it can get crowded inside too, and movement inside can be on the slow side (can get bottlenecks at the more popular figures). I would skip the Wax Museum!
Some of the other big museums may seem a bit on the boring side for your kids, but don't discount them completely!!! Some are great for kids.
If you haven't been to the Horniman Museum, I would head there. It's very child friendly, has great gardens and a lovely aquarium (we are not talking on the scale of the London Aquarium though).
The dinosaurs at the Natural History Museum at great.
Don't forget, most (if not all) the London museums put on special workshops/ events/ fun things to do for kids all through the summer and they are free. So even if you are not walking around the museum itself, check out their free kids events over the summer!
We have made telescopes at the National Maritime Museum, treasure boxes covered in shells at the Geffrye Museum, box cars at the London Transport Museum. And all for free!

Greenwich Park is one of my favourite parks, lots of interesting stuff, great views, etc. It is brilliant for kids too. It's heaving with grey squirrels!
St James' Park, another of my favourite London parks. Loads of ducks and other water birds. There is a great cafe called Inn the Park.
Coram's Fields - this is a park just for kids (no adults without kids allowed in!) and is superb. There are animals, a cafe and play facilities.

We also love the City Farms - there are a number dotted around London.
Enjoy! Wish I was going to London this summer!
