Just watched this in 3d, I normally can't see 3d (the silly different colour glasses version) but was able to see most of this in 3d (how do these new glasses work??)
anyway the film is your basic hollywood scifi formula, well done a bit long at 160 odd minutes, was a bit slow to start but fine once it gets going.
They resisted the urge to do 3d for 3d's sake, so no spears flying out the screen etc its all quite subtle (and better for it) the subtitles where really well done, when someone in the background spoke the titles where also in the background.
within the first 10 minutes you'll have worked out the entire plot of the film, and the ending.
The best 3d of the whole afternoon was the trailer for alice in wonderland, the cat comes right out at you (please bare in mind this is the first time I have ever seen 3d )

$1.6 billion worldwide as of this weekend. Will pass Titanic by the end of January. This movie's an absolute box-office monster.

just to add,
I also thought all the pictures etc beforehand didn't look real, and you could tell it was cgi etc, but in actual film you'd be hard pressed to tell what was real and what wasn't, the blue people aint no jarjar binks!!

Essentially, polarised glasses only let light through in one plane, horizontally or vertically.
You can see the effect with 2 pairs of polarised sunglasses, just put 2 lenses in front of each other and rotate one of the lenses, real polarised glasses will turn almost black when they get to right angles to each other.

I really got the goosebumps when I saw the cat coming at me with that freaky smile ! That was REAL 3D... And that's what I expected from Avatar, an immersing experience where everything comes at you, but sadly you just get the impression you're looking out the window, you're not part of the action ! |

One nitpick is that early in the film when Jake Sully gets separated from his group, Dr. Kate and the others are forced to head back because Col. Quaritch has forbidden night operations, and it's up to Jake to survive until morning. The clear implication is that the sun is going to rise the next day, like on a planet. However, Pandora is a moon and if it's like almost all moons in the solar system, it would be tidally locked---in other words, it would rotate so that it faces the planet Polyphemus at all times. In other words, periods of night and daylight should be MUCH longer than on Earth.

If we bought floating mountains, I don't see us caring too much about day-night cycles.

Please forgive my ignorance but I'm thinking (wrongly?) that just because our Moon has a side that is always "dark" TO US, doesn't mean that that side is always dark.
Am I being really stupid to think that that other side of the Moon gets sunshine as it orbits around Earth? I mean, if the same side is always facing us then surely the dark side is facing the Sun when the Moon is at the stage of it's orbit when it is between us and the Sun, right?
Also, when it is between us and the Sun, it is getting light reflected from Earth on the side facing us, isn't it?
So, I'm thinking that the "dark" side is sometimes VERY dark and sometimes VERY bright, meanwhile, the side that faces us sometimes gets some "direct" sunlight, sometimes gets light from us and sometimes is dark.

You MUST see it in 3D.
It comes out today in the French part of Switzerland and tomorrow in the German part. | | | | | Oooooh I loved this movie!!! It was the best movie in the history of the world! James Cameron did an excellent job! |

Remembering the "many" times in my early days when I had to redo a lens because I had the polarization off axis could almost make me cry.
It really is a neat trick how they make the movies with that polarization effect these days rather than the old color effect. Sooooo much easier on the eyes AND it makes it a more worthwhile experience for those who are color blind.

Loved the visuals though the plot was weak. | | | | | I truly mean no offense but I often find it funny when men complain about lack of plot in mediums of entertainment... when was the last time a skin flick actually had anything other than a weak plot? (Which is not to say that women don't watch / enjoy such movies but reality is that that industry is made successful by men.) | |
