I used to love someone very very dearly. He had blond hair, big brown eyes, and velvety ears that I would softly caress while watching the television.

His breath wasn't very nice, though, and he had a rather irritating habit of licking my feet in bed.

You'd have liked him, I'm sure.

The old man’s Secret
It was in a little village, a long time ago. In this little village, there was a chemist, a restaurant, a market only open on Sundays, a library, and a small park so children can take a walk with their dog. Nick, one of the few children who lived in Donner, was bored. In fact, there weren’t many children who were his age, but Lucy, his best friend. Nick was ten years old and loved adventure. His favourite films were the Indiana Jones movies that his father kept in a drawer in the living room. Later, he wanted to be an adventurer. But in Donner, adventure didn’t seem to exist...
One evening, the little boy gets a little bit out of the village. He liked to take long walks with his dog, but his mother didn’t want him to go a too long way from Donner. But this time, the boy didn’t want to listen. After a couple of meters, a large house came into his sight. The sort of house you only see in horror films, where a horrible witch lives. Nick wasn’t scared, not at all. He wanted to go in there. Suddenly, the door of the house opened on... an old and small man! He had a long white beard, and not much hair. He had small brown eyes, in form of almonds. On his sides, a black cat had his gaze on Domino, Nick’s dog. “Go away from my property!” cried the old man. And without that the man needing to repeat, Nick was running to reach Donner. But he noticed something was wrong: Domino wasn’t with him! So the little boy turned back. He saw the old man rushing into his house after the dog. “No, Domino! Come back!” yelled Nick. He didn’t know what to do. Go in that scary house or go home? If he get home, and tell his mother that he went out of Donner with Domino, and that the dog was stuck in the house of a stranger, she would be really mad. It was a bad idea to return home. It was getting dark, and his parents were probably already looking for him, and worrying. But he needed to go searching his dog. Now, Nick realised that he wasn’t made for adventure. He wanted to cry, he wanted his mom.
As he was walking, slowly, he looked at the ground. His cheeks were burning, and he held his tears. “Would Indiana Jones really cry for that, nick?” he asked himself. So he stopped in front of the giant rusty gate, and pushed to open it. It made a horrible squeak. He crossed the dark garden. There wasn’t much grass growing on the ground. Not much plants either, but some withered roses. There was a big tree, with any leafs on it. It was the end of the autumn, one month before Christmas. It was like the tree was alive, with the dark of the night and the cold wind blowing, which made Nick tremble. He quickly went in front of the door, and knocked three times. Any answer. So he opened. The inside of the house was even creepier than the garden. Only an old and dusty armchair was furnishing the living room. In the kitchen, lots of dirty plates were stacked. Upstairs, there were two rooms. One of them was empty, and the other was furnished with an old bed and a bedside table, with an alarm clock posed above. The boy was desperate. He had searched the whole house to find his dog. But obviously, he was gone. And the old man and his cat too. So Nick, dragging his feet, went to sit in the armchair installed in the living room. After a moment, he felt a hand touching his shoulder. Nick, really surprised, felt his heart jump in his chest, as if it wanted to go out of his body. “Don’t worry, it’s just me!” whispered Lucy. “I saw you leave Donner, so I followed you to see where you were going. You shouldn’t go a so long way from home; your mum will kill you if she knows.” Nick just stared at her. She was the kind of best friend who worries a lot about you. Nick trusted Lucy as if she was a diary. “And your mother will too! Go home right now Lucy. You’ll be in big trouble.” Lucy’s mother slapped her when she did something wrong. Nick was the only one to know. “I don’t care; I’ll help you to find Domino. He’s like my doggy!” said slowly the young girl, staring at Nick with her beautiful blue eyes. Suddenly, a bark escaped from downstairs. The two children looked at each other, and then rushed down the stairs. Nick fell down the stairs. His back ached, and he could no longer breathe for a few seconds. His friend didn’t say anything, didn’t do anything. She was motionless. He felt a gaze on him. He caught his breath, and then looked up. The old man was staring at him. “Are you ok?” he asked, friendly. He didn’t seem to be mad anymore. He helped Nick to stand up. “Children shouldn’t be outside at this time.” He looked at Lucy, then at nick, then at Lucy again. “What’s your name, sir?” asked politely the girl. Lucy had a knack for putting people at ease. “George” answered simply the man. “As you are here, I want to show you something. It’s so rare that I have some company.” George, who had difficulty walking despite his cane, walked to the brick wall. He leaned on one brick, and a door opened. The little boy, impressed, gave a quick gaze at Lucy, who didn’t even care about him anymore. He followed George and his friend. In the room, larger than a football stadium, were lots, lots of toys. He and Lucy thought it was a dream. They ran into the room, and started to look after toys that could be cool to bring home. And suddenly, Nick found his airplane, which he’d lost in the park once. “Why do you have my airplane?” he asked George, staring at him with his big grey eyes. “It was broken. One of the wings wasn’t fixed on it. I repaired it” he said. Lucy had found her teddy bear that she couldn’t found for a while. “So... Your repair toys?” asked gently the young girl. George just stared. After a long silence, he replied: “Yes, sort of.” Nick noticed that Domino was still missing. “Where’s my dog? And why don’t you give all this toys back to their owner?” The old man looked terrified and sad at the same time. He pointed his finger at something behind Nick. The little boy turned, and saw Domino running to him and his best friend. Lucy yelled: “Dominoooo!” she was obviously really happy that he was back. George still hadn’t answer at the second question. “The toys?” insisted the boy. “I’m too old to bring all this to the village, and give it back to this entire people, some of these toys are your parents’; they maybe don’t remember that they loosed them. And also, I’m too attached to all this stuff.” He said, painfully. George was really serious. Nick didn’t really know what to say. He waited for Lucy to give one of her great ideas, but she was as silent as they were. But Nick thought that it was a really bad idea to keep all this. He even found his little brother’s boat, which he used to have when he took his bath. So Nick simply said: “We’ll help you.”
It was Christmas. Donner was beautiful with all these multicolour lights. Edward, Nick’s little brother, rushed down the stairs to open his presents. A red packet caught his gaze. “I want to open that one first!” he said joyfully. “Go on then” said Nick, smiling about the joy of his brother who loved Christmas more than his birthday. Edward didn’t seem to care about the nice packaging anymore. When he finally finished open it, he started to yell: “My boat, my boat, my boat!” Nick’s parents asked him where he found it. He just answered that it was a long story, and it was true. After that, each Christmas, every resident of Donner received each Christmas one of their lost toy, both adults and children.
