Is £30k a good IT salary in London?

After living in Switzerland for a while I'm used to hearing about IT salaries in the range of 90K CHF or above. But a recruiter called me about a job in London for £30k and seemed offended when I started laughing. Is that a good salary there? Sounds extremely low to me.

I would say that you need about 30% more in Switzerland for the same quality of life. So 90k CHF in London you'd need 44k GBP. Thus, 30k is low. But he's a recruiter salesboy. Of course unless you tell him his product is the best ever, he'll act like you talked about his mother...

Thanks, economisto. That's an easy rule of thumb for me to remember.

depends on your level of experience, it can be 12k to 120k based on where you are in your career.

depends on the job, 30k for a low level it support job is an ok salary

30k for a dba with years of experiance is a joke.

Consider the costs of accommodation in London is £ 2-300 a week for something half decent, you will pay 25% in taxes and you can see that 30K isn't much.

Without knowing what you do how can we judge if 30k is a good salary? For support/helpdesk it's fine, for more specific fields it's low. It never ceases to amaze me how people who work in IT can be so general about their job when asking specific questions.

Re: Is £30k a good IT salary in London?

Check out: http://www.mysalary.co.uk/ and http://www.salarytrack.co.uk/average...te-salary.html

Average graduate salaries are around 23k GBP (median) and 25k GBP for London.

As others have said, it depends on experience and the job sector of course. But based on what friends back in the UK are telling me 30,000 GBP ain't much to live life in the consumer "must have/can't wait 'til I can afford it" world the UK now is.

My normal salary would be around 100k-120k CHF.

So, if I follow economisto's formula (-30%) to the letter, I would need about 77k - 93k GBP to be on a par in London.

economistos formula wasn't realistic for a UK salary if youre getting those kinds of figures... so again, without knowing what specific field you're in, it's impossible to judge.

EDIT - Ahh ok, he calculated it wrong, sorry.

but is that permie or contract?? 100-120k contract rate is a very low rate, or a normal permie rate.

again without saying what you do its impossible to say

ETA thats around the ball park figure of what I do, in london the same jobs pay around the low 40k mark.

I'm a developer. Yes, that's a permie salary.

So that would explain why British developers would come and work in CH, right? 40k doesn't sound like much for someone who could make 100-120k CHF. Or am I mixing apples and lemons?

Ignoring the above comments about specific positions...

30% less actual payment, but then you need to convert it to GBP.

So 77k - 93k CHF which is a salary of around 47-56k GBP.

Economistos formula was actually quite right. When I came here, I looked at London Salaries, and added 20%, and then I found, I was at the cheap end, and added another 10-15% when i looked for my next job

Doc.

it isnt really, if your 120k here your maybe, what a DBA ? unless you have banking your not going to command 75k for a DBA role in london. I would say 50ish.

Ok. Thanks.

That seems more consistent with the salaries I'm seeing on job ads.

Thought I might be missing something.
