In-car SatNav recommendations

Hi All,

I'm looking for an after market SatNav so I don't have to rely on Her Indoors doing the navigating . Women + map = chaos (IMHO).

A quick look round gives me thousands (OK, hundreds) of choices.

Does anyone have a recommendation or what-not-to-buy please?

Cheers
GBN

Him indoors got himself a Garmin Quest which he also uses for hiking and biking - however, the woman's voice is so damned irritating that you'll be grateful for the odd little quip from your good partner of things like 'if that thing told you to drive off a cliff then you'd do it'. Anyway it seems to cover all of Europe -

Re: In-car SatNav recommendations

TomTom devices get good reviews; I have a 5-year-old handheld Garmin eMap which has no voice guidance but has proved to be very useful.

Last two cars had nav built-in; both DVD-based and thus mapping is complete for Europe.

Latest offering has TMC; apparently this will route me past roadworks and queues........certainly shows them according to the missus.

Re: In-car SatNav recommendations

True, there are many options available.

I picked up a Acer when they first came out. Had to send it in for upgrade. But since, it works like a charm. Have maps for all of Europe.

One thing I noticed when using another brand for testing, it kept wanting to send me on these gravel roads over the mountain, not on the paved roads around them

The Acer keeps me on track, is user friendly and the voice is pleasing to the ear. Warnings are well in advance, finding a location or address simple and the unit is also internal battery operated for use while on foot or incase the unit becomes unplugged!

Most of all the price is right!

Have fun shopping

Bests
Scott

PS: My HIND (Human Internal Navigation Device) is usually too preoccupied with what is going on around the car and sees the signs too late. Thus, my decision for a GPS-Navi.

Re: In-car SatNav recommendations

Finally bit the bullet and bought a TomTom 910 (wanted the 710 but they were sold out).

What a great bit of gear! Really smooth map transition/refresh rate, easy to use, especially when calculating alternative routes on the fly. All connections go to docking station, so no cables to unplug everytime you take it out of the car. comes with remote control, PC docking station, all cables (except Ipod cable but who needs that), and travel pouch.

Thumbs up.
