Re: What eBook Reader to buy?

What I would also be interested in, is it possible to read magazines or things like that on the Kindle? Does the store offer any magazine subscriptions (e.g. like GEO, Economist, etc)?

Re: What eBook Reader to buy?

"With the biggest selection of any e-bookstore in the UK, you can shop more than 400,000 books, including bestsellers and new releases. UK and international newspapers, magazines, and blogs, plus more than 1 million free books, are also available."

from http://www.amazon.co.uk/kindle

Also, on the lack of a backlight, this is better for the eyes and the battery. Long battery life (weeks) and a backlight are incompatible ideas.

Re: What eBook Reader to buy?

Did you consider the 'nook' from Barnes & Noble ?

http://www.barnesandnoble.com/nook/index.asp

I don't know how it stacks up to your list but it's the one I would get. Digitec's online shop shows they will have them at the end of august for chf 229.

Re: What eBook Reader to buy?

I was thinking of the Kindle DX because I am mainly interested in reading A4 PDF documents.

Does anybody have any experience of the DX?

It looks like you have to buy it from the USA......and there is always the dreaded customs.

Any alternatives to the DX?

Re: What eBook Reader to buy?

to the OP, if you can drop the touchscreen requirement, the new kindle would make sense.

i'm thinking of getting one in addition to my current ebook reader simply to have easy access to the amazon store (though i balk at the idea for paying amazon for the privilege of buying from them).

There are no commercially available eInk touch screens yet.
sony have a few touch screen e-ink models. i have a prs-300 non-touchscreen model from sony.

i wanted non-touch screen as touchscreens are by nature very reflective and increase glare and are not as nice to read.

what kind of documents? if technical stuff which you need to flip back and forth, any e-ink screen is a no go simply due to the lag required to turn a page. a tablet device would be better.

Re: What eBook Reader to buy?

If you can wait, I would suggest the eee Tablet from Asus. They announced 3 new products in this article but the third one seems to be the most interesting one. The handwriting looks great, there is a camera on the back and the speed of page turning is much faster than anything else I have seen. Watch the video near the bottom of the article to see it in full flow.

Re: What eBook Reader to buy?

The new Kindle looks nice and the price point ($139) is exactly right. I think I'm going to pick one up, just need to work out which of the Amazon entities can deliver to CH for the least.

Also consider which Amazon entity you want to buy ebooks from, I think your account (but not your device) is tied to US or UK or ??

From what I have heard from friends the US and UK stores are much closer now in terms of inventory than they were at the initial Kindle launch in the UK.

Re: What eBook Reader to buy?

You can buy directly through Amazon as now that the Kindle is global it will ship to Switzerland. Mine has already arrived but I am on vacation so won't see it for another two days (!!).

They give you the total including priority int'l shipping and tax/duties when you check out. For the 3G edition it was USD203.28.

Will update this thread once I get home and have the chance to play with it.

Re: What eBook Reader to buy?

I would highly recommend the Kindle. I do not have the latest one that just came out but it is still top notch!...and the new one is even better and sexier.

Outside of the functions, I want to let you know that Amazon is a great customer oriented company. My kindle got damaged and they sent me a new one to CH and paid for for me to ship my damaged one back to them. Its sometime a long wait when calling them since CH is not on their call-back list but they were great with their service once you were connected to them.

Go for the kindle if you want a good ebook. I have friends with the sony one and at best, they were so-so, la-la. (no experience with the other options mentioned).

Sorry, it was Amazon US. The price when converted to sterling is 151 GBP and the cost of the Kindle in the UK store is 150 GBP. So for an extra pound I get it delivered to Switzerland with all taxes paid.

Re: What eBook Reader to buy?

KINDLE UPDATE!

So, I finally have my new toy in hand. Only had time to play with it about an hour, but so far so good. I have two intro free subscriptions, one for a magazine and one for a newspaper, and have three free books (Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Pride and Prejudice, etc) and one purchased book. Love how easy the text is to read. Thought at first I'd have an issue with the way the page 'flickers' every time you 'flip' a page, but after a few minutes your brain barely registers it anymore. I also got a nifty lighted cover for it. Yes, the cover is hefty (much more so than the kindle itself) but I hung out on my balcony tonight and read easily in the dark. Also found it easy to get immersed in the book.

Will update again if I decide I hate it.
Here are a couple of pics to show the lighted cover in action and the text clarity. Sorry if they aren't great but snapped them w/ my point and shoot in low light, no flash and only my non-surgeon-worthy shaky grip to steady the camera.

The first picture shows a magazine page with the light on. The second pic shows one of the many 'screen savers' the kindle displays when on 'off' mode, which I think it pretty neat. This is without the light on (which uses the kindle for power and thus doesn't operate when it's off).
