What music/artist do you recommend?

Hi all,

I had a thought ( I bet you were wondering what the noise was! ). Being a music lover that its about time to have a thread dedicated to just that.

What I want to start it the English forum music recommendations.
Basically there should be some guidelines.

1. Everyone should post positive things only. If you dont like an artist or band etc someone has recommended, get over it, maybe other people do like it and everyone has different tastes.

2. Lets start with people putting 5 good artists/bands and maybe what they are currently listening to (maybe 2 or 3 things) and lastly each time you find a new artist worthy of sharing you post it up.

I check regularly the English websites for new/good music but this I think is also a good way to find out about music. Perhaps its better to name not so well know stuff as for example putting "beatles" up who I love and listen too a lot doesnt really give something new.

So let me start it off:-

Current Favourite/good 5
1. The Magic Numbers
2. Arctic Monkeys
3. Scott Matthews
4. Newton Faulkner
5. Gossip

Couple just to add which are really good:-
Kooks, The View, Damien Rice,

There is a nice mix there, some rock, some easy/chillout and acoustic.
Hope you like, tell me what your listening too?

Excellent shout on Scott Matthews!!

I recommend

1. Frank Turner (ex lead singer of Million Dead, now a solo acoustic artist)
2. Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly
3. Band of Horses
4. We Are Scientists
5. The Decemberists

They're what I've been listening to lately anyway.

Re: What music/artist do you recommend?

Modern music is rubbish.

1. Joy Division
2. OMD (early 80's stuff)
3. BBC Radiophonic Studio
4. Neu (Neu75 is pure gold)
5 Blue Oyster Cult (mid 70's stuff)

If you like Joy Division, then have a listen to Interpol and Editors.
For OMD, have a try with Hot Hot Heat.
Then tell me new music is rubbish.

Fair enough, some of it is very similar to old music, but still a lot of it is good, you just have to look for it (hence why threads like this are fantastic!)

Electronic leanings (though not all), some new, some I keep going back to over and over

1. Solid Steel Mixes (6 of them, an ecclectic bunch of dj sets on the ninjatune label)
2. Kraftwerk
3. Roll Deep
4. Autechre
5. New Order

Hmmm...

Anywho...

1. M. Ward
2. Bright Eyes (check them out in St Gallen this weekend if you can drag yourself away from Arctic Monkeys)
3. The Shins (the new disc is just as strong as the older ones)
4. Rilo Kiley/Jenny Lewis
5. Midlake
6. The Hold Steady

Nice call on The Magic Numbers. Would have included them in my list, too. Wilco has been around a while and is kind-of well-known -- always interesting and changing. Ryan Adams has a new disc out this week that has been getting some good reviews. Cat Power is also amazing. She was great at Kaufleuten last November.

I guess I could have posted a few times...

Shame that Jools Holland's show is off for the summer. It's always a great place to see both new and established artists.

Done, it's like buying a Rolex watch in Bangkok market

Got a couple of CD from a Scottish singer in gaelic and a Sami band singing in Sami some of their traditionnal music with a twist which I'm going to listen to, I've more or less given up on modern pop/rock to be fair. I quite like Franz Ferdinand mind you

Haha, ironic that you should mention a band that have just ripped off Gang Of Four for their sound given your opener

Cat Power is another excellent shout, I also forgot to mention the "mellow female" stuff that I have around at the moment such as

1. Joanna Newsom (awesome voice, plays the harp, listen and learn)
2. Gemma Hayes
3. Natalie Merchant
4. Camera Obscura
5. (and the best of the bunch) Emiliana Torrini

The new Beastie Boys sounds very interesting btw, proper groovy music, no lyrics, I'll grow a 'tache to listen to that one...

Re: What music/artist do you recommend?

It's called "The Mix Up" and I just bought it on Amazon, along with "The in sound from way out" and a Depeche Mode best of. I noticed a live Tangerine Dream and a Popol Vuh album in my list of "saved for later"...

Re: What music/artist do you recommend?

I've been trying to listen to some of the bands playing in St Gallen this weekend, but:

1. Damien Rice - the best thing around for aaages, and fabulous live.
2. The Smiths - brilliant lyrics and I like Morrissey's solo stuff too.
3. Bob Dylan - Someone told me last year that Dylan doesn't begin and end with 'Blowin in the wind' (as I only had the Greatest Hits), and lent me 'Blood on the Tracks'. He was right, its brilliant, and I'm working through the rest.
4. Radiohead - 2nd and 3rd album. A few other decent albums were out around that time (Verve, Oasis, Blur, Pulp), still think these two are streets ahead.
5. Neil Young - not the best voice, but great music.
6. Belle and Sebastian - Tigermilk. How could anyone not like it?

I don't agree that there's no good music now - but I can understand how you might think that, if the only music you hear is from mainstream tv and radio.
