How Long does it take to hear if you've got the apartment

Just wondered as I've been waiting a week now. Am I being impatient, how long on average do you have to wait after you've submitted the application form and proof of earnings before they tell you if you're successful or not?

waiting time for apartments Bern

How long should you wait for a flat application in Geneva?

Sometimes you do get notified if you are unsuccessful ( rare in fact ). No news after a week is bad news IMO.

Not sure if you added the Debt-free certification letter with your application.

Tips on how to apply for an apartment

Agree with @jrspet that after a week, it's not looking too hopeful as many don't bother responding to unsuccessful applicants. That said, why not give them a friendly call or drop them an email. I can't see any harm in doing that either way.

Re: How Long does it take to hear if you've got the apartment

Usually demand far outstrips supply, hence the decision is made quickly if there are applicants who meet ALL the prerequisites ( there are always exceptions ).

Re: How Long does it take to hear if you've got the apartment

I think I did all the right things. Nice letter, explaining my reasons and my circumstances, a copy of my contract and 2 references, my boss and HR mgr. Hr also checked the form and helped me fill it in. I can't supply that debt letter as I haven't arrived yet and have no history, I also can't apply for my permit until I get there and need an address first. I did send a nice friendly email today asking if there was any news so hopefully I might hear back soon.

Thanks for the tips

Re: How Long does it take to hear if you've got the apartment

Silly question, but I thought I'd ask anyway. Have you personally visited the properties you applied for ?

Many would stay in a hotel first and provide the hotel address on forms. You can get the debt letter almost instantaneously for a fee ( was CHF17 some time ago in Zurich, valid for up to 3 months - required by almost all applicants even if it was their very first day in CH ).

With the hotel address ( or some other form of temporary lodging ), you can apply for the permit ( you might have to pay twice for the permit / change of address once you find your own lodging eventually ).

All the best in your search.

My experience has been that either you get ignored for weeks, or you don't hear at all or if you are lucky you can get into an apartment within 2 days.

In our experience, you can call back in 3-5 days and ask if they've made a decision. They're not going to call everyone who didn't get it, so you could just be sitting around waiting for no reasons. Give them a call!

It's like looking for a girlfriend.

When you find one you want, they don't get back to you for a week.

And you keep on telling on yourself, maybe they really like me, they've just forgotten my number...

I agree with the other post, that it may make sense to take some temporary accommodation first, then use that address to establish your mark here. You need to make an impression on the real estate person showing you around, otherwise get an apartment through a friend of a friend.

Maybe post a question re suitable temporary accommodations. A room in a flat share is much easier, or stay at the youth hostel or EasyHotel for say 3 or 4 weeks.

Best of luck...

Any danger with applying for more than one apartment at the same time? What if I get both?

Basel too. They kept silent four weeks so I kept looking... for nothing, I was accepted but the answer had not been sent "back down" to my contact person. Anything can happen. So little lettre and/or nice polite call when it's getting long is the only solution if one can not or don't want to wait. I was too patient.
